Book Computational Implications of the Zone of Dependence Concept for Three dimensional Boundary Layers on a Spinning Body

Download or read book Computational Implications of the Zone of Dependence Concept for Three dimensional Boundary Layers on a Spinning Body written by Clarence W. Kitchens (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of the three-dimensional boundary-layer equations and the influence of these properties on numerical solutions are examined. The three-dimensional boundary-layer equations are parabolic, but they possess a secondary hyperbolic-like, property. This hyperbolic property leads to the zone of dependence concept. It is shown that the zone of dependence concept plays an important role in obtaining accurate numerical solutions for three-dimensional boundary-layer problems; it is especially important for calculating the boundary layer on a spinning body at incidence. A simple flow field which simulates the essential features of this problem and is an exact solution of the three-dimensional boundary-layer equations is constructed.

Book The Role of the Zone of Dependence Concept in Three dimensional Boundary layer Calculations

Download or read book The Role of the Zone of Dependence Concept in Three dimensional Boundary layer Calculations written by Clarence W. Kitchens (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject is studied for the general initial-value problem which arises in several applications; e.g., a spinning body at incidence. An exact solution which simulates the essential features of the boundary layer on such a body is used as a test case. The zone of dependence concept places a restriction on the local mesh aspect ratio that may be used. Results from four finite-difference schemes are compared against the exact solution for various wall speeds and mesh aspect ratios. Error growth occurs when the zone of dependence rule is not satisfied. The sensitivity and manner of error growth for the four schemes are different; two of them are relatively insensitive. From stability analyses it is shown that the concepts of stability and zone of dependence are not the same. Our numerical experiments partly contradict the stability analyses.

Book Turbulent Flows

Download or read book Turbulent Flows written by Jean Piquet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-03-26 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: obtained are still severely limited to low Reynolds numbers (about only one decade better than direct numerical simulations), and the interpretation of such calculations for complex, curved geometries is still unclear. It is evident that a lot of work (and a very significant increase in available computing power) is required before such methods can be adopted in daily's engineering practice. I hope to l"Cport on all these topics in a near future. The book is divided into six chapters, each· chapter in subchapters, sections and subsections. The first part is introduced by Chapter 1 which summarizes the equations of fluid mechanies, it is developed in C~apters 2 to 4 devoted to the construction of turbulence models. What has been called "engineering methods" is considered in Chapter 2 where the Reynolds averaged equations al"C established and the closure problem studied (§1-3). A first detailed study of homogeneous turbulent flows follows (§4). It includes a review of available experimental data and their modeling. The eddy viscosity concept is analyzed in §5 with the l"Csulting ~alar-transport equation models such as the famous K-e model. Reynolds stl"Css models (Chapter 4) require a preliminary consideration of two-point turbulence concepts which are developed in Chapter 3 devoted to homogeneous turbulence. We review the two-point moments of velocity fields and their spectral transforms (§ 1), their general dynamics (§2) with the particular case of homogeneous, isotropie turbulence (§3) whel"C the so-called Kolmogorov's assumptions are discussed at length.
