Book On the Solution of Large Structured Linear Complementarity Problems

Download or read book On the Solution of Large Structured Linear Complementarity Problems written by Richard Steven Sacher and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of linear complementarity theory has yet to meet the challenge of large-scale programming. The paper delineates the underlying theory and an efficient method for solving a class of specially-structured linear complementarity problems of potentially very large size. Problems of the type considered arise, for example, in solving an approximation of the free boundary problem for infinite journal bearings. This application and computational experience with the method are presented here. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fixed Points: Algorithms and Applications covers the proceedings of the First International Conference on Computing Fixed Points with Applications, held in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina on June 26-28, 1974. This book is composed of 21 chapters and starts with reviews of finding roots of polynomials by pivoting procedures and the relations between convergence and labeling in approximation algorithm. The next chapters deal with the principles of complementary pivot theory and the Markovian decision chains; the method of continuation for Brouwer fixed point calculation; a fixed point approach to stability in cooperative games; and computation of fixed points in a nonconvex region. Other chapters discuss a computational comparison of fixed point algorithms, the fundamentals of union jack triangulations, and some aspects of Mann's iterative method for approximating fixed points. The final chapters consider the application of fixed point algorithms to the analysis of tax policies and the pricing for congestion in telephone networks. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, computer scientists, and advance mathematics students.

Book Algorithms for Continuous Optimization

Download or read book Algorithms for Continuous Optimization written by E. Spedicato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Algorithms for continuous optimiza tion: the state of the art" was held September 5-18, 1993, at II Ciocco, Barga, Italy. It was attended by 75 students (among them many well known specialists in optimiza tion) from the following countries: Belgium, Brasil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Spain, Turkey, UK, USA, Venezuela. The lectures were given by 17 well known specialists in the field, from Brasil, China, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA. Solving continuous optimization problems is a fundamental task in computational mathematics for applications in areas of engineering, economics, chemistry, biology and so on. Most real problems are nonlinear and can be of quite large size. Devel oping efficient algorithms for continuous optimization has been an important field of research in the last 30 years, with much additional impetus provided in the last decade by the availability of very fast and parallel computers. Techniques, like the simplex method, that were already considered fully developed thirty years ago have been thoroughly revised and enormously improved. The aim of this ASI was to present the state of the art in this field. While not all important aspects could be covered in the fifty hours of lectures (for instance multiob jective optimization had to be skipped), we believe that most important topics were presented, many of them by scientists who greatly contributed to their development.

Book Large Scale Linear and Integer Optimization A Unified Approach

Download or read book Large Scale Linear and Integer Optimization A Unified Approach written by Richard Kipp Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook about linear and integer linear optimization. There is a growing need in industries such as airline, trucking, and financial engineering to solve very large linear and integer linear optimization problems. Building these models requires uniquely trained individuals. Not only must they have a thorough understanding of the theory behind mathematical programming, they must have substantial knowledge of how to solve very large models in today's computing environment. The major goal of the book is to develop the theory of linear and integer linear optimization in a unified manner and then demonstrate how to use this theory in a modern computing environment to solve very large real world problems. After presenting introductory material in Part I, Part II of this book is de voted to the theory of linear and integer linear optimization. This theory is developed using two simple, but unifying ideas: projection and inverse projec tion. Through projection we take a system of linear inequalities and replace some of the variables with additional linear inequalities. Inverse projection, the dual of this process, involves replacing linear inequalities with additional variables. Fundamental results such as weak and strong duality, theorems of the alternative, complementary slackness, sensitivity analysis, finite basis the orems, etc. are all explained using projection or inverse projection. Indeed, a unique feature of this book is that these fundamental results are developed and explained before the simplex and interior point algorithms are presented.

Book Handbook of Global Optimization

Download or read book Handbook of Global Optimization written by R. Horst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 891 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global optimization is concerned with the computation and characterization of global optima of nonlinear functions. During the past three decades the field of global optimization has been growing at a rapid pace, and the number of publications on all aspects of global optimization has been increasing steadily. Many applications, as well as new theoretical, algorithmic, and computational contributions have resulted. The Handbook of Global Optimization is the first comprehensive book to cover recent developments in global optimization. Each contribution in the Handbook is essentially expository in nature, but scholarly in its treatment. The chapters cover optimality conditions, complexity results, concave minimization, DC programming, general quadratic programming, nonlinear complementarity, minimax problems, multiplicative programming, Lipschitz optimization, fractional programming, network problems, trajectory methods, homotopy methods, interval methods, and stochastic approaches. The Handbook of Global Optimization is addressed to researchers in mathematical programming, as well as all scientists who use optimization methods to model and solve problems.
