Serious problems can occur at this point, such as shock-induced flow separation which can cause the aircraft to spin out of control. Another important practical problem is the achievement of higher aerodynamic performance of aircraft at cruise conditions, which leads to considerable fuel savings. The success in application of numerical methods for simulation of transonic flow and aircraft design depends on developments in the underlying mathematical theory. This book presents a breakthrough in the solvability analysis of boundary value problems, which makes it possible to establish convergence of finite element approximations for shock-free flow and to provide a framework for putting the existing numerical methods on a more sound basis. Also, physical aspects concerned with patterns of formation and propagation of weak shock waves are analysed. This contributes to the understanding of the extreme sensitivity of transonic flow to perturbation of freestream conditions. The developed theoretical knowledge base yields promising concepts of the airfoil design and active flow control by airfoil/wing shape modifications or suction/blowing through a perforated surface. Results illustrating this procedure in two and three dimensions are given. They include modifications to part of the upper surface of an NACA 64A410 airfoil that will maintain shock-free flow over a range of Mach numbers for a fixed lift coefficient, and the modifications required on part of the upper surface of a swept wing with an NACA 64A410 root section to achieve shock-free flow. While the results are given for inviscid flow, the same procedures can be employed iteratively with a boundary layer calculation in order to achieve shock-free viscous designs. With a shock-free pressure field the boundary layer calculation will be reliable and not complicated by the difficulties of shock-wave boundary-layer interaction. (Author).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Computation of the Transonic Flow About a Swept Wing in the Presence of an Engine Nacelle A principal goal of computational transonic aerodynamics is to develop computa tional methods for the analysis of transonic flows and for the design of efficient transonic air craft. We are interested in particular in the problem of designing wings with only weak shocks at a given Mach number and angle of attack. Methods, which we shall describe below, exist for the design of shockless transonic airfoils and for computing the transonic ow about a given wing. One approach to the design of a low drag transonic swept wing is to start with a shockiess airfoil in each wing section. Three-dimensional effects will cause shocks on such a wing, but we expect them not to be too severe. By small readjustments of the wing surface, which can be made by a code which treats the wing surface as a free boun dary, we can redesign the wing to reduce the strength of the shocks. Our method takes this program one step further. If an obstacle, such as an engine nacelle, is placed in the ow near an almost shockless wing, sizeable shocks can be expected to appear on the wing.
