Book Computation of Travel Times and Station Correction Surfaces in Eurasia Using Three Dimensional Velocity Models

Download or read book Computation of Travel Times and Station Correction Surfaces in Eurasia Using Three Dimensional Velocity Models written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have investigated the performance of a variety of travel time computation methods for application in highly heterogeneous three-dimensional (3-D) velocity structures, such as those found in Central Eurasia. Recent 3-D models of the crust and upper mantle beneath Central Eurasia contain sharp vertical and horizontal velocity contrasts and thin layers which complicate the accurate computation of travel times. Techniques based on ray-perturbation theory or the graph method do not appear to work well when the velocity anomalies are large relative to the reference model. In these cases the reference ray can be very different from the minimum-time ray, and the methods fail to converge rapidly and in some cases do not converge at all to the global minimum. Ray shooting and finite-difference algorithms are more computationally expensive, but provide accurate results in the presence of large velocity contrasts. In the ray-shooting method, the model is parameterized in terms of smooth polynomials in all directions. Ray-shooting methods are normally implemented only in 2-D, and do not consider propagation paths off the sagittal plane. The finite difference method computes travel times for first-arriving phases for the entire model. Rays are obtained afterward by back-tracing from any point inside the model (receiver) to the source. This method is 3-D and the model is parameterized in terms of constant-velocity cubic cells. The accuracy of the travel times is determined by the cell size. Computer memory effectively limits the minimum cell size for a given region but this constraint can be overcome by computing travel times in 2-D.

Book Seismic Waves in Laterally Inhomogeneous Media

Download or read book Seismic Waves in Laterally Inhomogeneous Media written by Ivan Psencik and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue contains contributions presented at the international workshop Seismic Waves in Laterally Inhomogeneous Media V, which was held at the Castle of Zahrádky, Czech Republic, June 5 - 9, 2000. The workshop, which was attended by about 60 seismologists from 16 countries, was devoted mainly to the current state of theoretical and computational means of study of seismic wave propagation in complex structures. The special issue begins with papers dealing with the study and the application of the ray methods. Problems such as coupling of quasi-shear waves or smoothing of models for effective ray computations are dealt with. Applications of the ray methods in seismic exploration are presented. Further, directional wavefield decomposition, phase space, path integral and parabolic equation methods are discussed. Attention is also devoted to attenuation and scattering problems, and to seismic inversion problems.

Book Seismology and Structure of the Earth

Download or read book Seismology and Structure of the Earth written by Barbara Romanowicz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics: Seismology and Structure of the Earth, Volume 1, provides a comprehensive review of the state of knowledge on the Earths structure and earthquakes. It addresses various aspects of structural seismology and its applications to other fields of Earth sciences. The book is organized into four parts. The first part principally covers theoretical developments and seismic data analysis techniques from the end of the nineteenth century until the present, with the main emphasis on the development of instrumentation and its deployment. The second part reviews the status of knowledge on the structure of the Earths shallow layers, starting with a global review of the Earth's crustal structure. The third part focuses on the Earth's deep structure, divided into its main units: the upper mantle, the transition zone and upper-mantle discontinuities, the D region at the base of the mantle, and the Earth's core. The fourth part comprises two chapters which discuss constraints on Earth structure from fields other than seismology: mineral physics and geodynamics. Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic with in depth detail Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Book Advances in Geophysics

Download or read book Advances in Geophysics written by Ru-Shan Wu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-12-14 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant progress in our understanding of the Earth's structure and functioning is dependent on new and original observations. However, these observations cannot be interpreted in a quantitative way without tools to model them, and developing adequate modelling methods is also a prerequisite for progress. Seismological raw data in the 21st century are mostly three-component broadband recordings, and require advanced numerical tools to be modelled, especially if lateral variations in the model are accounted for in addition to the radial stratification of the Earth. Considerable progress has been made concerning modelling of elastic waves in laterally heterogeneous structures in the last decades, taking advantage of the development of computer power. The number of articles related to new developments of diverse methods is enormous and it can be very difficult for newcomers to get an overview of the different methods available, and to be able to find which method is most appropriate for his or her applications. This book aims at giving introductions and basic reviews of the modelling methods for elastic waves in laterally heterogeneous structures which are most commonly used in contemporary seismology, or may have great potential for the future.

Book excerpt: The special issue contains contributions presented at the international workshop Seismic waves in laterally inhomogeneous media IV, which was held at the Castle of Trest, Czech Republic, May 22-27, 1995. The workshop, which was attended by about 100 seismologists from more than 10 countries, was devoted mainly to the current state of theoretical and computational means of study of seismic wave propagation in complex structures. The special issue can be of interest for theoretical, global and explorational seismologists. The first part contains papers dealing with the study and the use of various methods of solving forward and inverse problems in complicated structures. Among other methods, discrete-wave number method, the finite-difference method, the edge-wave supperposition method and the ray method are studied and used. Most papers contained in the second part are related to the ray method. The most important topics are two-point ray tracing, grid calculations of travel times and amplitudes and seismic wave propagation in anisotropic media.
