Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine if there are significant benefits to teaching fractional computation to students in a small group setting. According to the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008), "Fractions are considered one of the most difficult areas for students to understand and compute, yet they are considered to be an important foundational skill for advanced mathematics." Students are taught fractional computation in the fourth and fifth grade and still have great difficulty with basic computations because they confuse the procedures for the different operations, and do not fully understand why they are manipulating fractions. According to Watt (2016), students struggling in math often lack understanding of fraction equivalency, which is key to advanced skills such as probability, rate, ratios, and functions. This study took two randomly selected groups of 6th grade students and administered small, flex-group style instruction to the treatment group (6T) and traditional whole group instruction to the control group (6B). Both groups were instructed with the district’s curriculum, which incorporated fractional computation within its content, however the treatment group received additional instruction specifically in the computation and understanding of fractional arithmetic. Students in both groups were given a pretest to form a baseline set of data. It was concluded that there were no significant differences between the two groups scores based on their respective means. After the treatment was given, a posttest was given and analyzed. This research concluded that providing students with direct instruction in fractional arithmetic, significantly affects the knowledge and ability to improve in fraction arithmetic. While both groups of students showed gains in this area, the treatment group outperformed the control group. Research concluded that students who are taught fractional computation in small groups, benefit highly from this type of instruction.

Consequently the Web, although synthetic at its surface, seems to be quite 'natural' deeper down, and one of the driving aims of the new field of Web Science is to discover how far down such ’naturalness’ goes. If the Web is natural to its core, that raises some fundamental questions. It forces us, for example, to ask if the central properties of the Web might be more elemental than the truths we cling to from our understandings of the physical world. In essence, it demands that we question the very nature of information. Understanding Information and Computation is about such questions and one possible route to potentially mind-blowing answers.
