Book excerpt: A digital computer program for calculating either continuous ascent or stop type decompression schedules is described, and examples of applications are given. The formulas used for continuous ascent were obtained analytically as solutions of differential equations relating the inert gas tension in the current critical tissue to the safe depth and with the actual depth kept equal to the safe depth at all times after an initial fast rise from the bottom to the safe depth. Thus the rate of decompression of the critical tissue controls the rate of ascent. Gas tensions in nine tissues having the same range of gas exchange half-times as have been used in EDU reports are calculated on a continuous basis, with the one having the deepest safe depth being the current critical tissue. The stop type ascent portion of the program may be used to generate a staged ascent using the same parameters for comparison with the continuous ascent schedule. The starting conditions for ascent may either be computed by the program from the dive history or be communicated to it as a subroutine in connection with another program. The program may be used either to prescribe ascent schedules or to analyze dives for which the history is known.

Tests in mice show that various gases exhibit qualitative and semi-quantitative differences in the characteristics of sickness, reactions to hypoxia, and the time before the onset of symptoms. A computer, programmed for nonlinear gas transfer and other variables, running in real time can compute directly from the breathing mixture and provide a real time solution to decompression sickness under various conditions. A combined therapeutic approach, recompression and dextran (an effective lipemic clearing agent) should be capable of treating decompression sickness in humans. Other papers investigate the influence of inert gases and pressure on the central nervous system, as well as, situations in undersea and manned chamber operations. This collection can prove valuable for physiologists, biochemists, cellular biologists, and researchers involved in deep sea diving.

Book excerpt: A decompression table was developed to provide safe, efficient decompression from exposures of 40 feet for 720 minutes to 300 feet for 180 minutes at suitable increments of depth. On the basis of the results of 46 long exposure dives it was determined that control of such slower half-time tissues as the 160 and 240 minute tissues was required to provide reasonably safe decompression. The control of the allowable tissue tensions at the decompression stops was determined on the basis of the relation of change (S) and differential (E) to known safe tissue tensions at 66 feet and 33 feet absolute for the various half-time tissues. Decompression time required for long exposures calculated on these controls is much greater than provided by the present Air Saturation Table. The tables presented provide safe decompression for all but subjects more susceptible than usual to decompression sickness from long exposures. (Author)
