Download or read book Compression Buckling Behavior of Large Scale Friction Stir Welded and Riveted 2090 T83 Al Li Alloy Skin Stiffener Panels written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To evaluate the potential of friction stir welding (FSW) as a replacement for traditional rivet fastening for launch vehicle dry bay construction, a large-scale friction stir welded 2090-T83 aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy skin-stiffener panel was designed and fabricated by Lockheed-Martin Space Systems Company - Michoud Operations (LMSS) as part of NASA Space Act Agreement (SAA) 446. The friction stir welded panel and a conventional riveted panel were tested to failure in compression at the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The present paper describes the compression test results, stress analysis, and associated failure behavior of these panels. The test results provide useful data to support future optimization of FSW processes and structural design configurations for launch vehicle dry bay structures.Hoffman, Eric K. and Hafley, Robert A. and Wagner, John A. and Jegley, Dawn C. and Pecquet, Robert W. and Blum, Celia M. and Arbegast, William J.Langley Research CenterFRICTION STIR WELDING; LAUNCH VEHICLES; SKIN (STRUCTURAL MEMBER); COMPRESSION TESTS; STRESS ANALYSIS; SPACECRAFT CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS; FABRICATION; RIVETING; ALUMINUM-LITHIUM ALLOYS

Book Friction Stir Welding

Download or read book Friction Stir Welding written by Noor Zaman Khan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of mechanical properties and its characterization is important to the weld quality whose further analysis requires mechanical property and microstructure correlation. Present book addresses the basic understanding of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process that includes effect of various process parameters on the quality of welded joints. It discusses about various problems related to the welding of dissimilar aluminium alloys including influence of FSW process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of such alloys. As a case study, effect of important process parameters on joint quality of dissimilar aluminium alloys is included.

Book Friction Stir Welding

Download or read book Friction Stir Welding written by Daniela Lohwasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friction stir welding (FSW) is a highly important and recently developed joining technology that produces a solid phase bond. It uses a rotating tool to generate frictional heat that causes material of the components to be welded to soften without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to move along the weld line. Plasticized material is transferred from the leading edge to trailing edge of the tool probe, leaving a solid phase bond between the two parts. Friction stir welding: from basics to applications reviews the fundamentals of the process and how it is used in industrial applications.Part one discusses general issues with chapters on topics such as basic process overview, material deformation and joint formation in friction stir welding, inspection and quality control and friction stir welding equipment requirements and machinery descriptions as well as industrial applications of friction stir welding. A chapter giving an outlook on the future of friction stir welding is included in Part one. Part two reviews the variables in friction stir welding including residual stresses in friction stir welding, effects and defects of friction stir welds, modelling thermal properties in friction stir welding and metallurgy and weld performance. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Friction stir welding: from basics to applications is a standard reference for mechanical, welding and materials engineers in the aerospace, automotive, railway, shipbuilding, nuclear and other metal fabrication industries, particularly those that use aluminium alloys. Provides essential information on topics such as basic process overview, materials deformation and joint formation in friction stir welding Inspection and quality control and friction stir welding equipment requirements are discussed as well as industrial applications of friction stir welding Reviews the variables involved in friction stir welding including residual stresses, effects and defects of friction stir welds, modelling thermal properties, metallurgy and weld performance

Book excerpt: Results from an investigation of the effects of underexpanded engine exhaust flow on the aerodynamic performance and stability of a cruise airplane at Mach 6 are presented. The influence of wing reflex angle and nozzle geometry on exhaust flow interference effects was investigated on a flat-plate model. The experiments were conducted at a free-stream Reynolds number of 17.05 X 10 (to the 6 power) based on the length of the airplane model over a model angle-of-attack range of 0(degrees) to 10(degrees) and at nozzle static-pressure ratios from 1 to approximately 4.
