Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 14: January to December, 1909, Inclusive In considering the question of pressures it should be remembered that the pressures named are those that should be obtained at the sand blast, which can be confirmed by attaching a pressure gage to the sand tank, and that if the air has to be led to any distance from the air compressor and receiver, the de livery pipe should be materially increased to allow for friction, otherwise the pressure will fall off and the action of the sand blast will not be up to requirements. With but little foresight and at a very little additional expense, air delivery pipes of ample diameter can be installed up to the sand blast, giving the benefit of the full pressure as well as that of a considerable body of air behind the sand jets. The article above quoted then speaks of the trouble which may be caused by moisture in the air, If the air pipe is long, it says, con densation may take place within it, which if allowed to enter the sand tank would moisten the sand, and care should be taken to remove this either by trapping or by arranging in the piping a U bend, from the bottom of which any condensed water may be drawn off, and by suitably jacketing the main line. It is the function of the air receiver to dry the air. If the air in the receiver is at its high est pressure and at its lowest temperature the moisture will be deposited there and no mois ture will make its presence known. With the receiver located near the compressor, as is customary, the air is not cool enough, but with a long pipe to traverse, not jacketed, and a receiver near the work the air should always be dry enough. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 20: January to December, 1915 This arrangement suggested high economy to begin with, since to have continually com pressed fresh air from the atmosphere, dcliv ering it at 100 lh., would have required a compressor of five or six times the volumetric capacity, with two stage compression, inter cooling and all that, with more than a pro portional aggregate of power consumption. The using of the same air continuously also gave control of its condition as to humidity and temperature, which in this case was of great importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Magazine, Vol. 15: January to December, 1910 The half - tone herewith shows the arrange ment which has revolutionized all this. It is the invention of Mr. C. H. Locker, of'the firm above referred to. It comprises in fact a single rock drill with a carriage and mounting and air-power devices which enable it to keep at work, actually drilling, as constantly as pos sible and minimize the delays required for shifting from hole to hole, for changing the steels, and for raising the drill by the feed screw when either change is made. This drill has largely made its record by avoiding stops, just as the big through express trains do. It has also the additional advantage of extra weight and power, which would not be prae tically available in a drill entirely operated and moved about by hand.
