Book Work Plan for the Remedial Investigation

Download or read book Work Plan for the Remedial Investigation written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Department of Energy (DOE) is conducting cleanup activities at the Weldon Spring site, which is located in St. Charles County, Missouri, about 48 km (30 mi) west of St. Louis. The Weldon Spring site consists of two noncontiguous areas -- the chemical plant area, which includes four raffinate pits, and the quarry. Cleanup activities at the Weldon Spring site are conducted in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), as amended, incorporating the values of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The contents of the documents prepared for the project are not intended to represent a statement regarding the legal applicability of NEPA to remedial actions conducted under CERCLA. In accordance with the integrated CERCLA/NEPA approach, a remedial investigation/feasibility study-environmental assessment (RI/FS-EA) is being conducted to evaluate conditions and potential responses for the quarry residuals operable unit (QROU). This operable unit consists of the following areas and/or media: the residual material remaining at the Weldon Spring quarry after removal of the pond water and bulk waste; underlying groundwater; and other media located in the surrounding vicinity of the quarry, including adjacent soil, surface water, and sediment in Femme Osage Slough. This work plan identifies the activities within the RI/FS-EA process that are being proposed to address contamination remaining at the quarry area.

Book Environmental Site Investigation

Download or read book Environmental Site Investigation written by Christopher Pickles and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental site investigation and characterization is a complex process that often includes a large number of variables, a limited number of resources, and not nearly enough time to complete properly. The investigation of a site is, however, potentially the most important part of an environmental project, as nearly all other aspects, from financial decisions, engineering design and construction tasks are based on the findings of an initial site investigation. The goal in site investigation is to use a number of methods to understand the conditions present on a site, and choose a clear and detailed method to record and present the findings for later reference. For larger projects, site investigations are often composed of ongoing testing and sampling over linger periods and might include several phases of implementation. Economic and political factors often play a large role in the depth and accuracy of environmental site investigations. The amount of time and resources needed to provide a complete and thorough site investigation are often lacking due to one or more economic or political factors. A simple construction project, for example, might have a very limited budget for design and construction. If the site investigation uses up time and money from the project schedule and budget without adding any additional value to the end product, the resources allocated to the site investigation are likely to be limited or reduced. By going step-by-step through the site investigation process, Geology and Environmental Site Investigation will empower students and practitioners to see the great importance that site investigation lends to the overall success of a project. Additionally, but gaining a thorough understanding of the current state of technology and methodology used for environmental site investigation, readers will better understand how to make their site investigations more efficient and beneficial to a project.

Book Practical Guide to Rock Tunneling

Download or read book Practical Guide to Rock Tunneling written by Dean Brox and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Practical Guide to Rock Tunneling fills an important void in the literature for a practical guide to the design and construction of tunnels in rock. Practical Guide to Rock Tunneling takes the reader through all the critical steps of the design and construction for rock tunnels starting from geotechnical site investigations through to construction supervision. The guide provides suggestions and recommendations for practitioners on special topics of laboratory testing, durability of rock and acceptance for unlined water conveyance tunnels, overstressing or deep and long tunnels, risk-based evaluation of excavation methods, contract strategies, and post-construction inspections. Key considerations and lessons learned from selected case projects are presented based on the author’s extensive international experience of over 30 years and 1000 km of tunneling for civil, hydropower, and mining infrastructure, including some of the most recognized projects in the world to date. Instead of revisiting all theory and concepts that can be found in other sources, this book contains the hard learned lessons from the author’s experience in the field of Rock Tunneling, gathered over 30 years of service.
