Download or read book Healthcare Reform in America written by Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable handbook makes the U.S. health care system understandable, reviews the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or "Obamacare," describes past health care reform efforts, and covers the important organizations and people involved in U.S. health care reform. Why does the United States produce poorer outcomes for Americans in terms of health care than most other developed countries that spend a lower percentage of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on health care? Should health insurance be private or should it be managed by the government? The second edition of Healthcare Reform in America: A Reference Handbook addresses these complex and difficult questions and many more in its thorough treatment of one of the most controversial issues in contemporary American discourse. The work provides a broad introduction to the history and key issues in the development and reform of the U.S. health care system. It then addresses the recent passage of the Affordable Care Act and the myriad of significant expected changes due to the Act, thereby providing readers with information essential to understanding the current issues regarding health care reform. This work serves as a valuable resource to high school and college students as well as to general readers wanting to learn about the history and current focus of health care reform in the United States.

Download or read book Care Without Coverage written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Book Health Care Reform and Disparities

Download or read book Health Care Reform and Disparities written by Toni P. Miles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-06-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes and examines how Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance plans combined with widespread business practices and fraud create inequity—the root cause of our dysfunctional health care system, and the reason for the rising cost of health care for all Americans. In Health Care Reform and Disparities: History, Hype, and Hope, prolific author Toni P. Miles, MD, PhD, uniquely expands the usual discussion of health disparities by including and emphasizing the voice and perspective of the consumer, and by featuring policy, media, and financing data. Highlighting the subjective experience humanizes the effects of bureaucratic inequity and inefficiency, while examining the facts and figures spotlights real-world opportunities for moving away from operating on a discrimination basis and refocusing on quality of care. The first chapter outlines the larger historical context of the health care crisis before subsequent sections describe individual aspects of the health care system—and each one's role in creating or exacerbating disparities. Health care issues specific to demographic groups such as young adults are addressed. This work is an accessible, eye-opening resource for educators, students, and policy makers, as well as anyone wanting to find up-to-date details on the policies and regulations evolving from the Affordable Care Act.

Download or read book Health Care Policy written by Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-10-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic review of major issues and trends in health care policy, including those related to physical health and disease trends, mental and behavioral health concerns, reorganizing the U.S. health system, and managed care and health care personnel. Kronenfeld addresses the problems, challenges, issues and trends in the policies that determine the role and future of health care in the United States. Also covered are special populations, such as the elderly and children, reproductive health, and issues cost, quality, and access to care. Health care policies affect all Americans. Managed care has been a major trend in the past decade's reorganization of the U.S. health care system, yet its future is uncertain. Despite unparalleled spending and the world's most technologically sophisticated health care, measure such as life expectancy and infant mortality rates indicate that the country's health outcomes may not be the best. Mental health and behavioral health problems are major impediments to quality of life for some Americans, and roughly 17% of the population under 65 does not have insurance coverage for necessary health care services. Despite calls for a major overhaul of the U.S. health care system, incremental reform is more likely than major, comprehensive reform.

Book The Changing Federal Role in U S Health Care Policy

Download or read book The Changing Federal Role in U S Health Care Policy written by Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1997-10-30 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health care in the United States at the end of the 20th century occupies a completely different place in the economy, in the public consciousness, and in its impact on government, than it did at the beginning of the century, or even in the early years of the Clinton Administration. Health care is now a multi-billion dollar industry; one that consumes more than 15 percent of the nation's GNP. Citizens now regard health care as essential to the quality of their lives, and a steady stream of new medications and procedures point to ways to extend the lives of our aging population and restore those injured on or off the job. At the same time, the changing patterns of health care have stirred a national debate over the growth of managed care and the role that government can play in providing solid health care standards—a medical safety net—within tightening budgetary restraints. This book explores the role of the federal government in health care policy development from the years of the Founding Fathers to the present. Kronenfeld reviews the key features of the American health care system, its infrastructure, and federal legislative process and outcomes in the health care arena. The current situation in health care is examined, with particular attention given to the attempt at major reform in the first Clinton administration, and to the modest changes that were ultimately passed. She closes with an examination of the future of health care and the role of government, emphasizing how current health care issues and concerns may set the stage for a changed federal role in funding and delivery of health care services in the next century. This comprehensive examination of the role of government in the health care system will be of great interest to students and researchers of public policy and the social aspects of American health care.

Download or read book Membership Primary Care written by Robert T Bailey Pharmd, MD and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, family medicine and primary care are on the verge of extinction. The biggest problem that has defined this issue is the lack of time physicians must spend with their patients, which, on the average, is only seven minutes. Since the resources and reimbursement for primary care doctors are so razor thin these physicians must build up panels of patients reaching into the thousands so they can run 30 or more patients through their office daily. This is an unsustainable vicious cycle, as more resources are required for these large numbers of patients, dramatically increasing the doctor's overhead. In Membership Primary Care: Transforming Family Medicine is Key to Healthcare Reform, Robert T. Bailey, PharmD, MD, shares revelatory wisdom that offers solutions for our dysfunctional and expensive healthcare system. Dr. Bailey explores a successful model to restore family medicine to its former days of glory and prominence, so it can play a primary role in reforming our healthcare system, improving the wellness of US citizens, and substantially reducing the high cost of healthcare. Written to both patients and healthcare thought leaders, Membership Primary Care clearly identifies the major problems in the medical field and provides a blueprint for improving family medicine. Putting into practice Dr. Bailey's teaching can result in a win-win-win situation for the patient, the doctor, and the healthcare system. With more universal acceptance of Dr. Bailey's model of care, primary care will draw more of our brightest medical students into this incredibly important field, while greatly improving patient care and decreasing utilization of the most expensive doorways into healthcare. The practical methods Dr. Bailey shares will reform our current system of sick care to one of wellness and prevention. The powerful truths within Membership Primary Care will change your understanding of all that healthcare can be. Dr. Bailey is a recognized thought leader in family medicine, primary care, and clinical pharmacy. He was inspired to write this book to offer an effective solution to reform family medicine and healthcare in general for the sake of the health of our citizens and to dramatically reduce our healthcare expenses as a country.
