Book Tropical Biology and Conservation Management Volume XI

Download or read book Tropical Biology and Conservation Management Volume XI written by Kleber Del Claro and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-05-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia of Tropical Biology and Conservation Management is a component of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Tropical environments cover the most part of still preserved natural areas of the Earth. The greatest biodiversity, as in terms of animals and plants, as microorganisms, is placed in these hot and rainy ecosystems spread up and below the Equator line. Additionally, the most part of food products, with vegetal or animal origin, that sustain nowadays human beings is direct or undirected dependent of tropical productivity. Biodiversity should be looked at and evaluated not only in terms of numbers of species, but also in terms of the diversity of interactions among distinct organisms that it maintains. In this sense, the complexity of web structure in tropical systems is a promise of future to nature preservation on Earth. In the chemicals of tropical plant and animals, could be the cure to infinite number of diseases, new food sources, and who knows what more. Despite these facts tropical areas have been exploited in an irresponsible way for more than 500 years due the lack of an ecological conscience of men. Exactly in the same way we did with temperate areas and also tropical areas in the north of Equator line. Nowadays, is estimated that due human exploitation, nation conflicts and social problems, less than 8% of tropical nature inside continental areas is still now untouchable. The extension of damage in the tropical areas of oceans is unknown. Thus so, all knowledge we could accumulate about tropical systems will help us, as in the preservations of these important and threatened ecosystems as in a future recuperation, when it was possible. Only knowing the past and developing culture, mainly that directed to peace, to a better relationship among nations and responsible use and preservation of natural resources, human beings will have a long future on Earth. These volumes, Tropical Biology and Natural Resources was divided in sessions to provide the reader the better comprehension possible of issue and also to enable future complementation and improvements in the encyclopedia. Like we work with life, we intended to transform this encyclopedia also in a “life” volume, in what new information could be added in any time. As president of the encyclopedia and main editor I opened the theme with an article titled: “Tropical Biology and Natural resources: Historical Pathways and Perspectives”, providing the reader an initial view of the origins of human knowledge about the tropical life, and what we hope to the future. In the sequence we have more than 100 chapters distributed in tem sessions: Tropical Ecology (TE); Tropical Botany (TB); Tropical Zoology (TZ); Savannah Ecosystems (SE); Desert Ecosystems (DE); Tropical Agriculture (TA); Natural History of Tropical Plants (NH); Human Impact on Tropical Ecosystems (HI); Tropical Phytopathology and Entomology (TPE); Case Studies (CS). This 11-volume set contains several chapters, each of size 5000-30000 words, with perspectives, applications and extensive illustrations. It is the only publication of its kind carrying state-of-the-art knowledge in the fields of Tropical Biology and Conservation Management and is aimed, by virtue of the several applications, at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Book Chloroplasts

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Reinert
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-05
  • ISBN : 3540382550
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Chloroplasts written by J. Reinert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant cells contain various types of plastid, the best known among which is the chloroplast. Apart from their predominant interest for the work on photo synthesis, however, chloroplasts have attracted considerable attention for other reasons. This pertains to extranuclear inheritance of cell organelles and, particularly important for this series, to the participation of chloroplasts as discrete and partly autonomous cell constituents in the developmental biochemistry of plants. This volume is composed of articles by investigators who are actively involved in work on various aspects of research on chloroplasts. Each author has independently covered and analyzed as comprehensively as possible the particular aspects assigned to him. This has the advantage of bringing out many different facets of the situation, though some overlapping has-to be taken into account. We are sure that this volume will enable the reader to gain a broad theoretical and experimental basis for the understanding of the development of chloroplasts and the relationship between plant cells and these organelles.

Book Genetic Mosaics and Cell Differentiation

Download or read book Genetic Mosaics and Cell Differentiation written by W. J. Gehring and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship of cell lineage and differentiation is one of the most intriguing problems in developmental biology. In most higher organisms, the analysis of the cell lineage has to rely on indirect methods. Only in the most suitable systems, like the nematodes, can the pattern of cell division be determined by direct observation under the microscope. In cases where this is not possible, the fate of the cells has to be examined by using cell markers. Most suitable for this purpose are genetic markers, provided that they do not interfere with the developmental pathway to be studied. However, suitable genetic markers and techniques for generating genetic mosaics are available in a few organisms only. Therefore, this volume is largely concerned with Drosophila and the mouse, which have been studied most extensively. In 1929 STURTEVANT introduced the analysis of gynandromorphs into devel opmental genetics. However, this important contribution remained largely unnoticed until the late sixties, when the potential of this technique for deter mining embryonic fate maps and the number of primordial cells was exploited, and the methodology extended to the mapping of mutational foci. Mitotic recombination was demostrated by STER:-

Book Fluorescence Based Biosensors

Download or read book Fluorescence Based Biosensors written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major challenges of modern biology and medicine consists in finding means to visualize biomolecules in their natural environment with the greatest level of accuracy, so as to gain insight into their properties and behaviour in a physiological and pathological setting. This has been achieved thanks to the design of novel imaging agents, in particular to fluorescent biosensors. Fluorescence Biosensors comprise a large set of tools which are useful for fundamental purposes as well as for applications in biomedicine, drug discovery and biotechnology. These tools have been designed and engineered thanks to the combined efforts of chemists and biologists over the last decade, and developed hand in hand together with imaging technologies. This volume will convey the many exciting developments the field of fluorescent biosensors and reporters has witnessed over the recent years, from concepts to applications, including chapters on the chemistry of fluorescent probes, on technologies for monitoring protein/protein interactions and technologies for imaging biosensors in cultured cells and in vivo. Other chapters are devoted to specific examples of genetically-encoded reporters, or to protein and peptide biosensors, together with examples illustrating their application to cellular and in vivo imaging, biomedical applications, drug discovery and high throughput screening.
