Book excerpt: Les composts de boues urbaines sont épandues sur des cultures pérennes afin d'apporter de la matière organique ; mais ils contiennent des macro-éléments et des éléments traces (dont les métaux lourds) susceptibles de nuire à l'environnement. Les conséquences d'un épandage dans un vignoble du Sud de la France (Vitis vinifera cv. Grenache) ont été étudiées de 1999 à 2001 à travers la physico-chimie du sol, le développemment de la vigne, et la qualité du vin. Le compost, issu du co-compostage de boues urbaines et de déchets verts, a été épandu aux doses de 10 (actuellement recommandée), 30 et 90 (maximum sur 10 ans) t/ha compost brut en mars 1999. Le taux de matière organique du sol (0-30 cm) a augmenté de 0,8% avant l'amendement à 1,1% 18 mois après. Les concentrations en éléments traces métalliques totaux et biodisponibles n'ont pas été modifiées, de même que les propriétés physiques du sol. Les concentrations d'azote minéral des parcelles fortement amendées étaient supérieures aux besoins de la vigne, d'où un risque de lessivage important les premiers 6 mois suivant l'épandage. De même, l'enrichissement du sol en phosphore laisse présager à long terme un danger environnemental. Ni la nutrition minérale de la vigne, ni la production de raisin n'ont été modifiées, mais la vigueur a été augmentée et la maturation retardée. Le vin des parcelles amendées aux fortes doses et issus de la première vendange était moins riche et moins apprécié. La seconde année, la qualité des vins était équivalente. L'apport d'un compost de boues sur des cultures pérennes paraît dangereux lors d'apport à fortes doses ou d'apports réguliers à des doses plus modérées (10 t/ha) en raison des risques de pollution par l'azote et le phosphore. Dans le vignoble, la dose d'apport d'un compost ne devrait pas dépasser 2 t/ha/an (matière fraîche), mais l'augmentation recherchée du taux de matière organique du sol n'apparaîtrait qu'à long terme et une fertilisation azotée serait nécessaire.
