Book Composite Materials in Aircraft Mishaps Involving Fire A Literature Review

Download or read book Composite Materials in Aircraft Mishaps Involving Fire A Literature Review written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Navy aircraft are involved in crash incidents, firefighters must be aware of hazards presented by airframe composite-material construction. Composite matrices may be combustible, contributing to the aircraft fuel load and burning hazard. Additionally, fibers released from burning composites may present a respiration hazard to firefighters. Current Navy and military doctrine recognize these hazards; cautionary guidance is provided for composite materials reinforced with carbon/graphite fibers and boron/tungsten fibers. The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), which provides technical guidance for aircraft fire safety, was concerned that hazards presented by new composite materials and greater quantities of composites may not be adequately addressed in current firefighting and guidance. The objective of this project was to perform a literature search to identify any existing "gaps in knowledge" concerning the role of composite materials in a fire mishap involving an aircraft having composite construction materials. With these "gaps" identified, future actions can be identified, prioritized, and performed.

Book Composite Fiber Hazards

Download or read book Composite Fiber Hazards written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews potential health hazards from carbon/graphite and boron composite materials used in aircraft. Carbon and boron fibers are used as reinforcement in an epoxy matrix to form composite material aircraft parts. There is increasing concern over the potential health effects of these fibers released during sanding and grinding of composite parts in structural repair shops, and during clean up operations following aircraft accidents involving fire and/or breakage of composite parts. With the demise of the term 'CORKER, ' hazards from carbon composite materials were deemphasized. However, the CORKER annotation only addressed the electrical shorting hazards from airborne fibers following a fire and did not examine in detail potential health effects. Maintenance workers fear that carbon fibers are carcinogens. A review of the current literature on carbon fiber indicates it is relatively inert. Industrial hygiene evaluations should include sampling for total dust and comparing the levels to the ACGIH TLV for nuisance dust. Occupational health efforts should focus on problems with contact dermatitis from the resins systems and toxic effects of resin hardeners.

Book Firefighting and Emergency Response Study of Advanced Composites Aircraft Objective 4

Download or read book Firefighting and Emergency Response Study of Advanced Composites Aircraft Objective 4 written by Howard T. Mayfield and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns existed regarding the decontamination of personal protective equipment (PPE) exposed to fires involving advanced composite materials (ACM). The concerns focused on soot particles and fugitive fiber emissions produced from burning ACM and expected to deposit on turnout suits and equipment. Contaminants to PPE were studied from live ACM fires and from contact with burned ACM. Photomicrography techniques were developed to provide quantitative measures of the contaminants. MATLAB and the Image Analysis Toolbox were used to quantify particulates photographed through microscopes on PPE material and test coupons. Coupons of material used in proximity bunker suit construction were exposed to burned ACM and were then cleaned, with quantitative measures of surface particle contaminants made prior to exposure, after exposure, and after cleaning, to test cleaning techniques of water washing, vacuum cleaning, simple brushing, decontamination with wipes, and cleaning with a sticky lint roller. Water washing and a sticky lint roller were the best of the techniques examined for removal of ACM-derived particulate contamination.
