Book An Assessment of the State of the art in the Design and Manufacturing of Large Composite Structures for Aerospace Vehicles

Download or read book An Assessment of the State of the art in the Design and Manufacturing of Large Composite Structures for Aerospace Vehicles written by Charles E. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an assessment of the state-of-the-art in the design and manufacturing of large composite structures are described. The focus of the assessment is on the use of polymeric matrix composite materials for large airframe structural components, such as those in commercial and military aircraft and space transportation vehicles. Applications of composite materials for large commercial transport aircraft, general aviation aircraft, rotorcraft, military aircraft, and unmanned rocket launch vehicles are reviewed. The results of the assessment of the state-of-the-art include a summary of lessons learned, examples of current practice, and an assessment of advanced technologies under development.

Book Third Conference on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design

Download or read book Third Conference on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the United States Air Force sponsored a 3-day conference November 4-6, 1975, to focus national attention on the use of fibrous composite materials in the design of flight vehicle structures and the important impact the use of such materials will have on future vehicle systems. Significant milestones have been achieved in composite structures design, test, and flight operations for a wide spectrum of aircraft, space vehicle, and civil sector applications. The continuing growth of the data base for material properties, design procedures, environmental exposure effects, manufacturing procedures, and flight service reliability has increased the level of acceptability and confidence necessary for widespread, routine composite applications. By including composites as baseline design materials, significant payoffs can be expected in terms of reduced structural weight fractions, longer structural life, reduced fuel consumption, reduced structural complexity, and reduced manufacturing cost. Technical papers are presented which describe work performed by the Government and Industry. The topics covered include recent flight test work on composite components, unique design concepts and hardware, specialized applications, operational experience, certification and design criteria, and significant contributions to the design technology base.

Book Structural Sandwich Composites

Download or read book Structural Sandwich Composites written by Composite Materials Handbook – 17 (CMH-17) and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last volume of this six-volume compendium is an update to the cancelled Military Handbook 23, which was prepared for use in the design of structural sandwich polymer composites, primarily for flight vehicles. The information presented includes test methods, material properties, design and analysis techniques, fabrication methods, quality control and inspection procedures, and repair techniques for sandwich structures in military and commercial vehicles. The Composite Materials Handbook, referred to by industry groups as CMH-17, is a six-volume engineering reference tool that contains over 1,000 records of the latest test data for polymer matrix, metal matrix, ceramic matrix, and structural sandwich composites. CMH-17 provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. It includes properties of composite materials that meet specific data requirements as well as guidelines for design, analysis, material selection, manufacturing, quality control, and repair. The primary purpose of the handbook is to standardize engineering methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials. It is used by engineers worldwide in designing and fabricating products made from composite materials.
