Book excerpt: In a rapidly changing world, with increasing competition in all sectors of transportation, railways are in a period of restructuring their management and technology. New methods of organization are introduced, commercial and tariff policies change radically, a more entrepreneurial spirit is required. At the same time, new high-speed tracks are being constructed and old tracks are renewed, high-comfort rolling stock vehicles are being introduced, logistics and combined transport are being developed. Awareness of environmental issues and search for greater safety give to the railways a new role within the transportation system. Meanwhile, methods of analysis have significantly evolved, principally due to computer applications and new ways of thinking and approaching old problems. Therefore it becomes necessary to come up with a new scientific approach to tackle management and engineering aspects of railways, to understand in-depth the origins and inter-relationships of the various situations and phenomena and to suggest the appropriate methods and solutions to solve the various emerging problems. This book aims to cover the need for a new scientific approach for railways. It is written for railway managers, economists and engineers, consulting economists and engineers, students of schools of engineering, transportation and management. The book is divided into three distinct parts: Part A deals with the management of railways, Part B deals with the track and, Part C deals with rolling stock and environmental topics. Each chapter of the book contains the necessary theoretical analysis of the phenomena studied, the recommended solutions, applications, charts and design of the specific railway component. In this way, both the requirement for a theoretical analysis is met, and the need of the railway manager and engineer for tables, nomographs, regulations, etc. is satisfied. Railways in Europe have separated activities of infrastructure from those of operation. In other parts of the world, however, railways remain unified. The book addresses both situation. Railways present great differences in their technologies. Something may be valid for one such technology, but not for another. To overcome this problem, regulations of the International Union of Railways (UIC) as well as European Standardization (CEN) have been used to the greatest extent possible. Whenever a specific technology or method is presented, the limits of its application are clearly emphasized.

Book excerpt: L'étude ferroviaire présentée dans ce mémoire traite de trois types de dégradations de profils des roues et des rails en service. Comme tous les solides devant assurer une liaison par contact, les roues et les rails ferroviaires sont affectés par des dégradations telles que l'usure et la fatigue. Dans un premier temps, on s'intéresse à l'usure régulière des profils des roues et des rails. Ce type d'usure influence en particulier la stabilité des véhicules, donc le confort et la sécurité. Nous exposons notre modèle de simulation numérique de l'usure transverse des profils ; sa validation étant assurée par des applications à des profils mesures sur le réseau S.N.C.F. nous abordons ensuite le phénomène d'usure irrégulière longitudinale des roues à grande vitesse. Nous traitons cette partie avec de nouvelles hypothèses sur un mécanisme d'apparition d'ondulations. L'origine de ce phénomène est due au couplage, à travers le contact, de la dynamique transversale des bogies et de la torsion de l'axe des essieux. En nous appuyant sur deux modèles de simulations numériques, nous montrons la validité des hypothèses et nous mettons en évidence le mécanisme d'usure irrégulière longitudinale des roues. La dernière partie est consacrée a la fatigue des rails soumis au contact roulant, on y étudie une forme particulière appelée le Head chocking. Une première phase, basée sur l'étude des efforts de contact dus au comportement en courbes de certains véhicules ferroviaires, nous permet d'isoler les caractéristiques du système véhicule-voie les plus contraignantes. Une seconde étape consiste à étudier les conditions d'amorçage des fissures par deux approches : le critère de Dang van et la mécanique de l'endommagement. Les résultats obtenus nous permettent de proposer des dispositions qui semblent appropriées à la lutte contre le Head chocking

Book excerpt: Dans des contextes conjoints de mutations du monde ferroviaire, et d'expansion de l'asservissement et du contrôle actif, cette thèse de doctorat de mécanique propose une réflexion sur le concept de suspensions actives et leurs applications aux voitures ferroviaires. Ces études, menées en collaboration entre le Département de Mécanique des Solides de l'Ecole Centrale de Lyon et la Direction de la Recherche et de la Technologie de la SNCF, ont permis de développer diverses approches du problème : approches théoriques par recherche de lois de contrôle, approches numériques par simulations des effets de suspensions actives sur des modèles réalistes de véhicules ferroviaires et quantification du confort, approches techniques par la définition de spécifications de choix de technologiques et approches expérimentales par la conduite de phases d'essais et la connaissance du comportement dynamique du véhicule. Les apports majeurs de ce travail résident en des synthèses de lois de contrôle (lois optimales et lois optimales non linéaires), la génération de nouveaux concepts comme le contrôle global (contrôle simultané des mouvements transversaux et mouvements verticaux de la voiture), et le contrôle multilois (contrôle adaptatif utilisant une combinaison linéaire de lois optimales, la combinaison linéaire étant assurée au moyen de pondérations issues d'un calcul de logique floue). La connaissance du système ferroviaire et la volonté de construire des modèles réalistes ont permis l'établissement de simulations indiquant des gains potentiels de confort notoires. Le choix de nouvelles technologies - actionneur électromécanique - est lui aussi innovant dans cette gamme de puissance destinée au contrôle de mouvement de grosses structures mobiles. Les essais à venir devraient être riches en enseignements et leur diffusion intéressera certainement la communauté des chercheurs. En attendant, ce mémoire, conçu dans un esprit didactique, se limite à une synthèse actualisée.
