Book The Reader s Guide to the Talmud

Download or read book The Reader s Guide to the Talmud written by Jacob Neusner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2001 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This systematic introduction to the Talmud of Babylonia (Bavli) answers basic questions of form: how is this a coherent document? How do we make sense of the several languages in which it is written? What are the principal parts of the complex writing? Turning to questions of modes of thought, the account proceeds to address the intellectual character of the Bavli and in particular the character and uses of its dialectics. Finally, questions of substance come to the fore: how does the Talmud relate to the Torah? and how does tradition enter in? These basic questions of rhetoric, topic, and logic that anyone approaching the text will raise are dealt with clearly and authoritatively.

Book Rabbinic Interpretation of Scripture in the Mishnah

Download or read book Rabbinic Interpretation of Scripture in the Mishnah written by Alexander Samely and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a systematic and detailed description of early rabbinic hermeneutics as it can be reconstructed from the Mishnah (third century c.e.). Samely clarifies the conditions of a modern appreciation of rabbinic hermeneutics and provides a unified set of concepts for its precise description, based on modern linguistics and philosophy of language. Basic features of rabbinic hermeneutics and its difference from modern historical reading are explained, and a catalogue of recurrent techniques of interpretation is defined.

Book A Theological Commentary to the Midrash Song of Songs Rabbah

Download or read book A Theological Commentary to the Midrash Song of Songs Rabbah written by Jacob Neusner and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This theological commentary to the Rabbinic Midrash explores a simple proposition, in three parts. I. The reading of Scripture by principal parts of the Rabbinic Midrash is formed by compositions and composites that are animated by a cogent theological system. II. These primary components of the Midrash-compilations, further, are in part aimed at systematic demonstrations of theorems of a theological character. III. While forming a principal part of a large theological structure and system, each document is unique. This commentary in its concluding chapter presents what is common to the animating theology of Rabbinic Judaism in all its documentary components and what is unique to Song of Songs Rabbah.

Book Rabbinic Authority

  • Author : Michael S. Berger

  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Rabbinic Authority written by Michael S. Berger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rabbis of the first five centuries of the Common Era loom large in the Jewish tradition. Until the modern period, Jews viewed the Rabbinic traditions as the authoritative contents of their covenant with God, and scholars debated the meanings of these ancient Sages words. Even after the eighteenth century, when varied denominations emerged within Judaism, each with its own approach to the tradition, the literary legacy of the talmudic Sages continued to be consulted. In this book, Michael S. Berger analyzes the notion of Rabbinic authority from a philosophical standpoint. He sets out a typology of theories that can be used to understand the authority of these Sages, showing the coherence of each, its strengths and weaknesses, and what aspects of the Rabbinic enterprise it covers. His careful and thorough analysis reveals that owing to the multifaceted character of the Rabbinic enterprise, no single theory is adequate to fully ground Rabbinic authority as traditionally understood. The final section of the book argues that the notion of Rabbinic authority may indeed have been transformed over time, even as it retained the original name. Drawing on the debates about legal hermeneutics between Ronald Dworkin and Stanley Fish, Berger introduces the idea that Rabbinic authority is not a strict consequence of a preexisting theory, but rather is embedded in a form of life that includes text, interpretation, and practices. Rabbinic authority is shown to be a nuanced concept unique to Judaism, in that it is taken to justify those sorts of activities which in turn actually deepen the authority itself. Students of Judaism and philosophers of religion in general will be intrigued by this philosophical examination of a central issue of Judaism, conducted with unprecedented rigor and refreshing creative insight.

Download or read book The Rabbis and the Prophets written by Jacob Neusner and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2011 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the Rabbis of late antiquity took over writings from what they recognized as ancient times and of divine origin and they re-presented selections of those writings in accord with their own project's requirements, glossing clauses of the prophetic Scriptures but not whole, propositional discourses.
