Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a reactive distillation column, both the chemical conversion and the distillative separation of the product mixture are carried out simultaneously. Through this integrative strategy, chemical equilibrium limitations can be overcome, higher selectivities can be achieved and heat of reaction can be directly used for distillation. Increased process efficiency and reduction of investments and operational costs are the direct results of this approach. Highly renowned international experts from both industry and academia review the state-of-the-art and the future directions in application, design, analysis and control of Reactive Distillation processes. Part I surveys various industrial applications and covers both established large scale processes as well as new chemical reaction schemes with high future potential. Part II provides the vital details for analysis of reactive phase equilibria, and discusses the importance of chemical reaction kinetics, while Part III focuses on identifying feasible column configurations and designing their internal structure. Analysis and control of the complex dynamic and steady-state behavior of reactive distillation processes are described in Part IV. Reactive Distillation - a very promising alternative to conventional reaction-distillation flow schemes.

This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely treatment of distillationcombining steady-state designand dynamic controllability As the world continues to seek new sources of energy, the distillation process remains one of the most important separation methods in the chemical, petroleum, and energy industries. And as new renewable sources of energy and chemical feedstocks become more universally utilized, the issues of distillation design and control will remain vital to a future sustainable lifestyle. Distillation Design and Control Using Aspen Simulation introduces the current status and future implications of this vital technology from the dual perspectives of steady-state design and dynamics. Where traditional design texts have focused mainly on the steady-state economic aspects of distillation design, William Luyben also addresses such issues as dynamic performance in the face of disturbances. Utilizing the commercial simulators Aspen Plus and Aspen Dynamics, the text guides future and practicing chemical engineers first in the development of optimal steady-state designs of distillation systems, and then in the development of effective control structures. Unique features of the text include: * In-depth coverage of the dynamics of column design to help develop effective control structures for distillation columns * Development of rigorous simulations of single distillation columns and sequences of columns * Coverage of design and control of petroleum fractionators Encompassing nearly four decades of research and practical developments in this dynamic field, the text represents an important reference for both students and experienced engineers faced with distillation problems.

Book Advanced Distillation Technologies

Download or read book Advanced Distillation Technologies written by Anton A. Kiss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distillation has historically been the main method for separating mixtures in the chemical process industry. However, despite the flexibility and widespread use of distillation processes, they still remain extremely energy inefficient. Increased optimization and novel distillation concepts can deliver substantial benefits, not just in terms of significantly lower energy use, but also in reducing capital investment and improving eco-efficiency. While likely to remain the separation technology of choice for the next few decades, there is no doubt that distillation technologies need to make radical changes in order to meet the demands of the energy-conscious society. Advanced Distillation Technologies: Design, Control and Applications gives a deep and broad insight into integrated separations using non-conventional arrangements, including both current and upcoming process intensification technologies. It includes: Key concepts in distillation technology Principles of design, control, sizing and economics of distillation Dividing-wall column (DWC) – design, configurations, optimal operation and energy efficient and advanced control DWC applications in ternary separations, azeotropic, extractive and reactive distillation Heat integrated distillation column (HIDiC) – design, equipment and configurations Heat-pump assisted applications (MVR, TVR, AHP, CHRP, TAHP and others) Cyclic distillation technology – concepts, modeling approach, design and control issues Reactive distillation – fundamentals, equipment, applications, feasibility scheme Results of rigorous simulations in Mathworks Matlab & Simulink, Aspen Plus, Dynamics and Custom Modeler Containing abundant examples and industrial case studies, this is a unique resource that tackles the most advanced distillation technologies – all the way from the conceptual design to practical implementation. The author of Advanced Distillation Technologies, Dr. Ir. Anton A. Kiss, has been awarded the Hoogewerff Jongerenprijs 2013. Find out more (website in Dutch)...

Book Design and Operation of Multivessel Batch Distillation

Download or read book Design and Operation of Multivessel Batch Distillation written by Anwaruddin Hisyam and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distillation processes in chemical industries have shown significant roles for separating valuable compounds from a mixture. In a specific separation process like separation of perfumes, essential oils, and pharmaceutical products, batch distillation is somehow preferable than continuous one. Batch distillation, however, in these separation processes is advantageous, particularly in the flexibility of fluctuating concentration of feed and products, and in changing production capacity based on market demand. In addition, the separation can be performed in only single batch distillation column for all the changing conditions. Due to the dynamic behavior of the operation of batch distillation that leads to more difficult operation, such efforts have been done to attain the desired specifications and, at the same time, to increase the operability. The efforts include both the design and operation of batch distillation. This research focuses on the investigation of separation behavior of multivessel batch distillation for multicomponent mixtures. The distillation unit used in this research consists of two columns with a vessel between the columns, a reflux vessel on the top of the column, and a reboiler (still pot). The experimental data are validated by simulation. Several cases of separation processes are represented by case studies as follows: Top product recovery, removal of light and heavy impurities, and removal of middle boiling component. By using an ideal ternary mixture consisting of ethanol, 1-propanol, and n-butanol, the case studies were used to investigate the separation behavior. It is found that for the case of top product recovery, increasing the vessel holdup of the middle vessel did not make a significant effect to the increase of ethanol purity in top vessel. However, an increase of ethanol purity in top vessel was obtained by simultaneously increasing the middle vessel holdup and reducing the holdup of top vessel. In this case, reducing the top vessel holdup of 50% results in the maximum achievable ethanol purity in top vessel of 96%. For the case of removal of light and heavy impurities, the concern was on the trade-off between product purity and product recovery. An agreement was found to have 91% purity of 1-propanol in the middle vessel with recovery of 74%. However, if it is desired to produce high purity product with suffering on the product recovery, reprocessing the top and bottom product can be carried out to recover the middle component in another batch. In addition, for the case of removing a middle boiling component from a mixture, increasing the middle vessel holdup did not give significant effect to the ethanol purity in top vessel. This may, therefore, be uneconomical to carry out since it leads to more losses of ethanol in middle vessel. An additional investigation on an introduction of slop vessels in the operation of multivessel batch distillation was also discussed in this thesis through simulation works. For the case studies discussed, it is found that slop vessel holdup and slop vessel position simultaneously give significant effects on the product purity of respective vessels.
