Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Vol 2 of 2 written by William H. Herndon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2 of 2: The True Story of a Great Life As he entered the trial, relates one of his col leagues at the bar, * where most lawyers would ob ject he would say he reckoned it would be fair to let this in, or that; and sometimes, when his adver sary could not quite prove what Lincoln knew to be the'truth, he 'reckoned it would be fair to admit the truth to be so-and-so. When he did object to the court, and when he heard his objections an swered, he would often say, Well, I reckon I must be wrong.' Now, about the time he had practised this three-fourths through the case, if his adversary didn't understand him, he would wake up in a few minutes learning that he had feared the Greeks too late, and find himself beaten. He was wise as a serpent in the trial of a cause, but I have had too many scares from his blows to certify that he was harmless as a dove. When the whole thing was unravelled, the adversary would begin to see that what he was so blandly giving away was simply what he couldn't get and keep. By giving away six points and carrying the seventh he carried his case, and the whole case hanging on the seventh, he traded away everything which would give him the least aid in carrying that. Any man who took Lincoln for a simple-minded man would very soon wake up with his back in a ditch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 11 Among the paintings hitherto assigned to places within the Capitol are two which mark events forever memorable in the history of mankind, - thrice memorable in the history of America. The first is the painting by Vanderlyn, which represents, though with inadequate force, the great discovery which gave to the civilized world a new hemisphere. The second, by Trumbull, represents that great Declaration which banished forever from our shores the crown and sceptre of imperial power, and proposed to found a new nation upon the broad and enduring basis of liberty. To-day we place upon our walls this votive tablet, which commemorates the third great act in the history of America, - the fulfilment of the promises of the Declaration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2 of 2 The principle of this legislation had already been published to the country in a very fortunate way by General Butler. In May, 1861, being in com mand at Fortress Monroe, he had refused, under instructions from Cameron, to return three fugi tive slaves to their rebel owner, . And he had in geniously put his refusal on the ground that they were contraband of war. The phrase instantly became popular. General Butler says that, as a lawyer, [he] was never very proud of it; but technical inaccuracy does not hurt the force of an epigram which expresses a sound principle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 6 While I speak to you to-day, the body of the President who ruled this people is lying honored and loved, in our city. It is impossible with that sacred presence in our midst for me to stand and speak of the ordinary topics which occupy the pulpit. I must speak of him today; and I therefore undertake to do what I had intended to do at some future time, to invite you to study with me the character of Abraham Lincoln, the impulses of his life, and the causes of his death. I know how hard it is to do it rightly, how impossible it is to do it worthily. But I shall speak with confidence because I speak to those who loved him, and whose ready love will fill out the deficiencies in a picture which my words will weakly try to draw. I can only promise you to speak calmly, conscientiously, affectionately, and with what understanding of him I can command. We take it for granted first of all, that there is an essential connection between Mr. Lincolns character and his violent and bloody death. It is no accident, no arbitrary decree of Providence.
