Book Principles of Asynchronous Circuit Design

Download or read book Principles of Asynchronous Circuit Design written by Jens Sparsø and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Asynchronous Circuit Design - A Systems Perspective addresses the need for an introductory text on asynchronous circuit design. Part I is an 8-chapter tutorial which addresses the most important issues for the beginner, including how to think about asynchronous systems. Part II is a 4-chapter introduction to Balsa, a freely-available synthesis system for asynchronous circuits which will enable the reader to get hands-on experience of designing high-level asynchronous systems. Part III offers a number of examples of state-of-the-art asynchronous systems to illustrate what can be built using asynchronous techniques. The examples range from a complete commercial smart card chip to complex microprocessors. The objective in writing this book has been to enable industrial designers with a background in conventional (clocked) design to be able to understand asynchronous design sufficiently to assess what it has to offer and whether it might be advantageous in their next design task.

Book Asynchronous Circuit Design for VLSI Signal Processing

Download or read book Asynchronous Circuit Design for VLSI Signal Processing written by Teresa H. Meng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asynchronous Circuit Design for VLSI Signal Processing is a collection of research papers on recent advances in the area of specification, design and analysis of asynchronous circuits and systems. This interest in designing digital computing systems without a global clock is prompted by the ever growing difficulty in adopting global synchronization as the only efficient means to system timing. Asynchronous circuits and systems have long held interest for circuit designers and researchers alike because of the inherent challenge involved in designing these circuits, as well as developing design techniques for them. The frontier research in this area can be traced back to Huffman's publications `The Synthesis of Sequential Switching Circuits' in 1954 followed by Unger's book, `Asynchronous Sequential Switching Circuits' in 1969 where a theoretical foundation for handling logic hazards was established. In the last few years a growing number of researchers have joined force in unveiling the mystery of designing correct asynchronous circuits, and better yet, have produced several alternatives in automatic synthesis and verification of such circuits. This collection of research papers represents a balanced view of current research efforts in the design, synthesis and verification of asynchronous systems.

Book Logic Synthesis for Asynchronous Controllers and Interfaces

Download or read book Logic Synthesis for Asynchronous Controllers and Interfaces written by Jordi Cortadella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-12 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to logic synthesis and design techniques for asynchronous circuits. It uses the mathematical theory of Petri Nets and asynchronous automata to develop practical algorithms implemented in a public domain CAD tool. Asynchronous circuits have so far been designed mostly by hand, and are thus much less common than their synchronous counterparts, which have enjoyed a high level of design automation since the mid-1970s. Asynchronous circuits, on the other hand, can be very useful to tackle clock distribution, modularity, power dissipation and electro-magnetic interference in digital integrated circuits. This book provides the foundation needed for CAD-assisted design of such circuits, and can also be used as the basis for a graduate course on logic design.

Book Introduction to Asynchronous Circuit Design

Download or read book Introduction to Asynchronous Circuit Design written by Jens Sparsø and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the design of asynchronous circuits. It is an updated and significantly extended version of an eight-chapter tutorial that first appeared as Part I in the book "Principles of asynchronous circuit design -- A systems perspective" edited by Sparsø and Furber (2001); a book that has become a standard reference on the topic. The extensions include improved coverage of data-flow components, a new chapter on two-phase bundled-data circuits, a new chapter on metastability, arbitration, and synchronization, and a new chapter on performance analysis using timed Petri nets. With these extensions, the text now provides a more complete coverage of the topic, and it is now made available as a stand-alone book. The book is a beginner's text and the amount of formal notation is deliberately kept at a minimum, using instead plain English and graphical illustrations to explain the underlying intuition and reasoning behind the concepts and methods covered. The book targets senior undergraduate and graduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering and industrial designers with a background in conventional (clocked) digital design who wish to gain an understanding of asynchronous circuit design.

Book Finite State Machines in Hardware

Download or read book Finite State Machines in Hardware written by Volnei A. Pedroni and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the theory and design of hardware-implemented finite state machines, with design examples developed in both VHDL and SystemVerilog languages. Modern, complex digital systems invariably include hardware-implemented finite state machines. The correct design of such parts is crucial for attaining proper system performance. This book offers detailed, comprehensive coverage of the theory and design for any category of hardware-implemented finite state machines. It describes crucial design problems that lead to incorrect or far from optimal implementation and provides examples of finite state machines developed in both VHDL and SystemVerilog (the successor of Verilog) hardware description languages. Important features include: extensive review of design practices for sequential digital circuits; a new division of all state machines into three hardware-based categories, encompassing all possible situations, with numerous practical examples provided in all three categories; the presentation of complete designs, with detailed VHDL and SystemVerilog codes, comments, and simulation results, all tested in FPGA devices; and exercise examples, all of which can be synthesized, simulated, and physically implemented in FPGA boards. Additional material is available on the book's Website. Designing a state machine in hardware is more complex than designing it in software. Although interest in hardware for finite state machines has grown dramatically in recent years, there is no comprehensive treatment of the subject. This book offers the most detailed coverage of finite state machines available. It will be essential for industrial designers of digital systems and for students of electrical engineering and computer science.

Book Handbook of Combinatorial Optimization

Download or read book Handbook of Combinatorial Optimization written by Ding-Zhu Du and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combinatorial (or discrete) optimization is one of the most active fields in the interface of operations research, computer science, and applied math ematics. Combinatorial optimization problems arise in various applications, including communications network design, VLSI design, machine vision, air line crew scheduling, corporate planning, computer-aided design and man ufacturing, database query design, cellular telephone frequency assignment, constraint directed reasoning, and computational biology. Furthermore, combinatorial optimization problems occur in many diverse areas such as linear and integer programming, graph theory, artificial intelligence, and number theory. All these problems, when formulated mathematically as the minimization or maximization of a certain function defined on some domain, have a commonality of discreteness. Historically, combinatorial optimization starts with linear programming. Linear programming has an entire range of important applications including production planning and distribution, personnel assignment, finance, alloca tion of economic resources, circuit simulation, and control systems. Leonid Kantorovich and Tjalling Koopmans received the Nobel Prize (1975) for their work on the optimal allocation of resources. Two important discover ies, the ellipsoid method (1979) and interior point approaches (1984) both provide polynomial time algorithms for linear programming. These algo rithms have had a profound effect in combinatorial optimization. Many polynomial-time solvable combinatorial optimization problems are special cases of linear programming (e.g. matching and maximum flow). In addi tion, linear programming relaxations are often the basis for many approxi mation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems (e.g. dual heuristics).

Book Hardware Design and Petri Nets

Download or read book Hardware Design and Petri Nets written by Alex Yakovlev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardware Design and Petri Nets presents a summary of the state of the art in the applications of Petri nets to designing digital systems and circuits. The area of hardware design has traditionally been a fertile field for research in concurrency and Petri nets. Many new ideas about modelling and analysis of concurrent systems, and Petri nets in particular, originated in theory of asynchronous digital circuits. Similarly, the theory and practice of digital circuit design have always recognized Petri nets as a powerful and easy-to-understand modelling tool. The ever-growing demand in the electronic industry for design automation to build various types of computer-based systems creates many opportunities for Petri nets to establish their role of a formal backbone in future tools for constructing systems that are increasingly becoming distributed, concurrent and asynchronous. Petri nets have already proved very effective in supporting algorithms for solving key problems in synthesis of hardware control circuits. However, since the front end to any realistic design flow in the future is likely to rely on more pragmatic Hardware Description Languages (HDLs), such as VHDL and Verilog, it is crucial that Petri nets are well interfaced to such languages. Hardware Design and Petri Nets is divided into five parts, which cover aspects of behavioral modelling, analysis and verification, synthesis from Petri nets and STGs, design environments based on high-level Petri nets and HDLs, and finally performance analysis using Petri nets. Hardware Design and Petri Nets serves as an excellent reference source and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.
