Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Commercial and Industrial Geography. - A leading feature of this book is the treatment of industrial and commercial geography. In actual life, it is a knowledge of the countries of the earth, and of the people who inhabit them, of their resources and industries, their cities and commercial relations, that one needs for practical business purposes, or even for an intelligent appreciation of the contents of the daily newspapers. Industrial Illustrations. - In carrying out this plan we have been engaged for three years past in collecting from all parts of the world industrial pictures - photographs showing machinery in actual operation, and under these we have placed descriptions which give in a few words a clear idea of the process of manufacture. We have distributed these throughout the book in such a way as to identify each industry with some state or country where it is especially prominent. We believe that this plan will awaken present interest and prove of permanent value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Whichever way it is turned, the magnetic needle swings slowly around, and finally settles to rest with one end pointing nearly north and the other end nearly south. Knowing these two directions, the others can be easily determined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Book of Physical Geography Classic Reprint written by Ralph S. Tarr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography 4. Suppose again you had been the commanding officer at some great battle, and wished to explain the movements of the troops to a friend, to shew how this farmhouse was taken, that clump of trees occupied, and that road defended, in short how the battle went from beginning to end; what would you do? You would draw it all out small on a piece of paper, in the same proportions, and with the places and things in their positions with regard to each other, just as it would look if you were hanging over it in a balloon in other words, you would make a map of it, and then you could easily shew your friend where the regiments stood, and how the batteries were placed, and in short could go through all the successive operations of the day, and make them plain to him, plainer than they were in the battle itself, where only one part could be seen at a time.
