This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 1069 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to using energy principles and variational methods for solving problems in solid mechanics This book provides a systematic, highly practical introduction to the use of energy principles, traditional variational methods, and the finite element method for the solution of engineering problems involving bars, beams, torsion, plane elasticity, trusses, and plates. It begins with a review of the basic equations of mechanics, the concepts of work and energy, and key topics from variational calculus. It presents virtual work and energy principles, energy methods of solid and structural mechanics, Hamilton’s principle for dynamical systems, and classical variational methods of approximation. And it takes a more unified approach than that found in most solid mechanics books, to introduce the finite element method. Featuring more than 200 illustrations and tables, this Third Edition has been extensively reorganized and contains much new material, including a new chapter devoted to the latest developments in functionally graded beams and plates. Offers clear and easy-to-follow descriptions of the concepts of work, energy, energy principles and variational methods Covers energy principles of solid and structural mechanics, traditional variational methods, the least-squares variational method, and the finite element, along with applications for each Provides an abundance of examples, in a problem-solving format, with descriptions of applications for equations derived in obtaining solutions to engineering structures Features end-of-the-chapter problems for course assignments, a Companion Website with a Solutions Manual, Instructor's Manual, figures, and more Energy Principles and Variational Methods in Applied Mechanics, Third Edition is both a superb text/reference for engineering students in aerospace, civil, mechanical, and applied mechanics, and a valuable working resource for engineers in design and analysis in the aircraft, automobile, civil engineering, and shipbuilding industries.

Book Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics

Download or read book Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics written by Wojciech Pietraszkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deformation near a material particle of the classical continuum is produced by successive superposition of a rigid-body translation, a pure stretch along principal directions of strain and a rigid-body ro tation of those directions. The rotational part of deformation is par ticularly important in the non-linear analysis of thin-walled solid structures such as ~eams, thin-walled bars, plates and shells, since in this case finite rotations may appear even if the strains are infinite simal. It seems that the research concerning the application of finite ro tations is carried out independently in different fields of structural mechanics. Theoretical and numerical methods developed and the results obtained for a particular type of the structure or for a particular ma terial behaviour not always are used to analyse similar problems for other types of structures or for another material behaviour. Since the research in this field had been growing rapidly, it was decided to organize an informal international meeting, under the auspi ces of the European Mechanics Co~mittee, entitled: Euromech Colloquium 197 "Finite Rotations in Structural Mechanics". The meeting was held on 17 - 20 September 1985 in Jablonna, a small suburbian area of Warsaw.

Book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics

Download or read book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics written by Victor Berdichevsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thereareabout500booksonvariationalprinciples. Theyareconcernedmostlywith the mathematical aspects of the topic. The major goal of this book is to discuss the physical origin of the variational principles and the intrinsic interrelations between them. For example, the Gibbs principles appear not as the rst principles of the theory of thermodynamic equilibrium but as a consequence of the Einstein formula for thermodynamic uctuations. The mathematical issues are considered as long as they shed light on the physical outcomes and/or provide a useful technique for direct study of variational problems. Thebookisacompletelyrewrittenversionoftheauthor’smonographVariational Principles of Continuum Mechanics which appeared in Russian in 1983. I have been postponing the English translation because I wished to include the variational pr- ciples of irreversible processes in the new edition. Reaching an understanding of this subject took longer than I expected. In its nal form, this book covers all aspects of the story. The part concerned with irreversible processes is tiny, but it determines the accents put on all the results presented. The other new issues included in the book are: entropy of microstructure, variational principles of vortex line dynamics, va- ational principles and integration in functional spaces, some stochastic variational problems, variational principle for probability densities of local elds in composites with random structure, variational theory of turbulence; these topics have not been covered previously in monographic literature.

Book Mechanics Today

Download or read book Mechanics Today written by S. Nemat-Nasser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics Today, Volume 5 contains some of the papers presented at a symposium to honor Eric Reissner, held at the University of California in San Diego, on June 23, 1978, under the sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research. The symposium provided a forum for discussing various topics related to mechanics, from the pseudo-elasticity of living tissues and compression of spherical cells to kinematically unstable space frameworks. Reissner's equations for sandwich plates are also considered. Comprised of 36 chapters, this volume begins with an analysis of the state of stress near the boundary of a thick plate by means of "end solutions" obtained from Reissner's sheaf deformation plate theory. A deformable primary reflecting surface composed of an array of relatively small diameter circular elements is then described. The discussion then turns to the "Taylor instability" of the surface of an elastic-plastic plate; free vibration spectrum structure of a shell of revolution; and the momentum-balance method in earthquake engineering. Subsequent chapters focus on the intrinsic equations of shell theory with some applications; stress analysis in plasticity; density-wave theory of the spiral structure of galaxies; and a mixture theory for wave propagation in anisotropic angle-ply laminates. This book will be of interest to engineers and physicists.

Book Methods of Functional Analysis for Application in Solid Mechanics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publications oriented to the interests of engineering scientists and graduate students on topics of functional analysis and its applications are rare - this book has been written to fill the gap in the literature. It provides a readable account of basic mathematic topics, with illustrative examples and chapters devoted to finite elements, variational principles of elasticity and plasticity, variational inequalities and elastic stability. The text is entirely self-contained and covers a wide range of topics and ideas, from elementary concepts to modern theories and applications, and includes numerous references. It is written for engineers, graduate students and researchers who need a general knowledge of modern mathematical methods in solid mechanics.

Book Variational Methods for Problems from Plasticity Theory and for Generalized Newtonian Fluids

Download or read book Variational Methods for Problems from Plasticity Theory and for Generalized Newtonian Fluids written by Martin Fuchs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational methods are applied to prove the existence of weak solutions for boundary value problems from the deformation theory of plasticity as well as for the slow, steady state flow of generalized Newtonian fluids including the Bingham and Prandtl-Eyring model. For perfect plasticity the role of the stress tensor is emphasized by studying the dual variational problem in appropriate function spaces. The main results describe the analytic properties of weak solutions, e.g. differentiability of velocity fields and continuity of stresses. The monograph addresses researchers and graduate students interested in applications of variational and PDE methods in the mechanics of solids and fluids.
