Book Complementary Variational Principles for Boundary Value Problems I

Download or read book Complementary Variational Principles for Boundary Value Problems I written by B. Noble and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this series of papers a general variational principle and two complementary variational principles are developed for the simultaneous equations: Tp = partial derivative of W(x, p, u) with respect to u, and Su = partial derivative of W(x, p, u) with respect to p, where T, S are linear operators and S is the adjoint of T. The resulting formulae are of wide applicability and include most of the complementary variational principles which occur in applied mathematics. In this paper the implications of the variational principles are worked out in some detail when T = d/ dx, S = -d/ dx, including a discussion of extra terms which are required to deal with general boundary conditions.

Book Variational Principles and Free boundary Problems

Download or read book Variational Principles and Free boundary Problems written by Avner Friedman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced graduate-level text examines variational methods in partial differential equations and illustrates their applications to a number of free-boundary problems. Detailed statements of the standard theory of elliptic and parabolic operators make this treatment readable for engineers, students, and nonspecialists alike. The text's first two chapters can be used for a single-semester graduate course in variational inequalities or partial differential equations. The succeeding chapters -- covering jets and cavities, variational problems with potentials, and free-boundary problems not in variational form -- are more specialized and self-contained. Readers who have mastered chapters 1 and 2 will be able to conduct research on the problems explored in subsequent chapters. Bibliographic remarks conclude each chapter, along with several problems and exercises.

Download or read book Variational and Free Boundary Problems written by Avner Friedman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications VARIATIONAL AND FREE BOUNDARY PROBLEMS is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1990- 91 IMA program on "Phase Transitions and Free Boundaries. " The aim of the workshop was to highlight new methods, directions and problems in variational and free boundary theory, with a concentration on novel applications of variational methods to applied problems. We thank R. Fosdick, M. E. Gurtin, W. -M. Ni and L. A. Peletier for organizing the year-long program and, especially, J. Sprock for co-organizing the meeting and co-editing these proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation whose financial support made the workshop possible. Avner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE In a free boundary one seeks to find a solution u to a partial differential equation in a domain, a part r of its boundary of which is unknown. Thus both u and r must be determined. In addition to the standard boundary conditions on the un known domain, an additional condition must be prescribed on the free boundary. A classical example is the Stefan problem of melting of ice; here the temperature sat isfies the heat equation in the water region, and yet this region itself (or rather the ice-water interface) is unknown and must be determined together with the tempera ture within the water. Some free boundary problems lend themselves to variational formulation.

Book On Dual Complementary Variational Principles in Mathematical Physics

Download or read book On Dual Complementary Variational Principles in Mathematical Physics written by John Tinsley Oden and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of boundary value problems involving T*T-operators is given. Problems in mathematical physics can be decomposed into 3 canonical equations. Variational principles can be developed corresponding to these equations. Likewise, for any operator T one can construct a dual pair of operators S*S. A dual system of canonical equations can be developed with corresponding variational principles. Consequently, a set of 8 complementary and dual complementary variational principles suggest themselves. A number of applications are cited, together with extensions of nonlinear problems. (Author).

Book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics with Engineering Applications

Download or read book Variational Principles of Continuum Mechanics with Engineering Applications written by V. Komkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1987-12-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics.
