Book Local and Regional Development

Download or read book Local and Regional Development written by Andy Pike and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local and regional development is an increasingly global issue. For localities and regions, the challenge of enhancing prosperity, improving wellbeing and increasing living standards has become acute for localities and regions formerly considered discrete parts of the ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ worlds. Amid concern over the definitions and sustainability of ‘development’, a spectre has emerged of deepened unevenness and sharpened inequalities in the development prospects for particular social groups and territories. Local and Regional Development engages and addresses the key questions: what are the principles and values that shape definitions and strategies of local and regional development? What are the conceptual and theoretical frameworks capable of understanding and interpreting local and regional development? What are the main policy interventions and instruments? How do localities and regions attempt to effect development in practice? What kinds of local and regional development should we be pursuing? This book addresses the fundamental issues of ‘what kind of local and regional development and for whom?’, frameworks of understanding, and instruments and policies. It outlines what a holistic, progressive and sustainable local and regional development might constitute before reflecting on its limits and political renewal. With the growing international importance of local and regional development, this book is an essential student purchase, illustrated throughout with maps, figures and case studies from Asia, Europe, and Central and North America.

Book Dependent Growth Foreign Investment and the Development of the Automotive Industry in East Central Europe

Download or read book Dependent Growth Foreign Investment and the Development of the Automotive Industry in East Central Europe written by Petr Pavlínek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical analysis of recent developments in the automotive industry of East-Central Europe (ECE). Economists, industry specialists and national governments have considered the rapid development of the automotive industry in ECE in the past twenty years an unqualified success. This rapid growth has been based on large inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Western Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea, and it significantly contributed to GDP growth, created thousands of new jobs, and completely transformed the previously existing automotive industry in the region. This volume offers an analysis that goes beyond uncritical celebratory accounts of this rapid growth. It is based on original, detailed firm-level research conducted by the author in Czechia and Slovakia between 2009 and 2015 that covered assembly firms and the networks of component suppliers. Theoretically and conceptually, the analysis will draw on the global production networks and global value chains perspectives. Drawing on the original empirical data and on additional available information, this volume concentrates on several important questions related to the development of the automotive industry in ECE in the 2000s:• The role of FDI in the rapid development of the automotive industry after 1990 and particularly in the 2000s.• The upgrading of the automotive industry in East-Central Europe through FDI• The position of ECE in the automotive industry research and development (R&D)• The effects of the 2008-2009 economic crisis in the automotive industry of ECE.• The role of state in the rapid development of the automotive industry in ECE in the 1990s and 2000s.• The effects of FDI on domestic firms in the form of linkages between foreign-owned and domestic firms and spillovers from foreign-owned to domestic firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As Canada emerges from the recent economic downturn, firms in industrial clusters face a series of unique challenges. From established clusters in auto parts and wine, to emerging clusters in biotechnology, photonics and multimedia, firms must adapt to rapidly changing demand and cost conditions, cope with increased competition at home and abroad, and finance an accelerating pace of innovation. The papers in this volume examine how firms in eight clusters are meeting these challenges by accessing resources and markets, managing economic uncertainty, and adapting to market changes. Representing the latest research findings from members of the Innovation Systems Research Network, the papers highlight a number of key themes: the contribution of both local and global sources of knowledge to innovation within the clusters, the powerful draw of external markets that can act as the primary stimulus to innovative behaviour, the interaction between key elements of the research infrastructure and innovative firms, and the complex, but essential, influence of public policy on cluster dynamics."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Factors Affecting Employee s Retention in Automobile Service Workshops of Assam An Empirical Study

This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An organization’s ability to attract and retain talent is an essential component of talent sustainability. When organizations experience employee turnover, organizational knowledge is lost (Cotton & Tuttle, 1986; Lowe & Barnes, 2002). Employee retention affects an organization’s overall performance. In the coming years, organizations including the federal government will experience an increase in attrition due in part to retirements. Annually, organizations spend billions of dollars replacing the talented employees who have left their employ (Mathis, 2006a). In addition, organizations will need to replace employees that are eligible to retire. Baby boomers are defined as people born between 1945 and the early 1960’s (Business Dictionary, 2013). The retirement of baby boomers will decrease the supply of talent in the next five years. As the need for talent increases, the acquisition of talent becomes more competitive as organization pull from the same pool of candidates.

Book Cities Responding to Climate Change

Download or read book Cities Responding to Climate Change written by Stephen Jones and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the climate policy approaches established by various city governments. It details the strategies, plans and initiatives that have so far been designed to both mitigate and adapt to the impacts of global warming. In doing so, it considers the implications of the actions taken by leading cities and its effects on underlying theoretical assumptions relating to policy development and management processes in achieving climate policy outcomes. Cities Responding to Climate Change establishes an analytical framework that critically examines the application of performance management by city governments in their policy responses to climate change. It draws its focus on the city governments of Copenhagen, Stockholm and Tokyo to bring together and discuss the concepts, strategies and practices that have since been introduced to respond to the climate challenges faced. This book highlights the lessons to be learned by other city governments around the world contemplating serious action with climate policies to lessen the impacts of global warming. It will be of particular interest to practitioners and researchers seeking evidence of how governments deliver on their commitments and improve their effectiveness in implementing climate polices.

Book Strengthening Competitiveness In Bangladesh Thematic Assessment

Download or read book Strengthening Competitiveness In Bangladesh Thematic Assessment written by Sanjay Kathuria and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is volume 2 of a three-volume publication on Bangladesh’s trade prospects. Bangladesh’s ambition is to build on its very solid growth and poverty reduction achievements, and accelerate growth to become a middle income country by 2021, and share prosperity more widely amongst its citizens. This includes one of its greatest development challenges: to provide gainful employment to the over 2 million people that will join the labor force each year over the next decade. Moreover, only 54.1 million of its 94 million working age people are employed. Bangladesh needs to use its labor endowment even more intensively to increase growth and, in turn, to absorb the incoming labor. The Diagnostic Trade Integration Study identifies the following actions centered around four pillars to sustain and accelerate export growth: (1) breaking into new markets through a) better trade logistics to reduce delivery lags ; as world markets become more competitive and newer products demand shorter lead times, to generate new sources of competitiveness and thereby enable market diversification; and b) better exploitation of regional trading opportunities in nearby growing and dynamic markets, especially East and South Asia; (2) breaking into new products through a) more neutral and rational trade policy and taxation and bonded warehouse schemes; b) concerted efforts to spur domestic investment and attract foreign direct investment, to contribute to export promotion and diversification, including by easing the energy and land constraints; and c) strategic development and promotion of services trade; (3) improving worker and consumer welfare by a) improving skills and literacy; b) implementing labor and work safety guidelines; and c) making safety nets more effective in dealing with trade shocks; and (4) building a supportive environment, including a) sustaining sound macroeconomic fundamentals; and b) strengthening the institutional capacity for strategic policy making aimed at the objective of international competitiveness to help bring focus and coherence to the government’s reform efforts. This second volume provides in-depth analysis across seven cross-cutting themes that underpin most of the findings of pillars 1 and 2 above.
