Book Spatial Competition and Price Discrimination with Capacity Constraints

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We characterize mixed-strategy equilibria when capacity constrained suppliers can charge location-based prices to different customers. We establish an equilibrium with prices that weakly increase in the costs of supplying a customer. Despite prices above costs and excess capacities, each supplier exclusively serves its home market in equilibrium. Competition yields volatile market shares and an inefficient allocation of customers to firms. Even ex-post cross-supplies may restore efficiency only partly. We show that consumers may benefit from price discrimination whereas the the firms make the same profits as with uniform pricing. We use our findings to discuss recent competition policy cases and provide hints for a more refined coordinated-effects analysis.

Book Spatial Price Integration in Competitive Markets with Capacitated Transportation Networks

Download or read book Spatial Price Integration in Competitive Markets with Capacitated Transportation Networks written by Ian Yihang Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we examine the relationship between the equilibrium prices of spatially separated market participants and the transportation network that connects them; we focus in particular on isolating the effect that the transportation network can have on price integration. We first find that certain network structures and link costs can guarantee a bound on price differences between spatially separated participants when there are no capacity constraints. We extend this analysis to the case when there are binding transportation constraints, and generalize the effects of the transportation network on price integration using a time series decomposition. We then develop an empirical methodology, termed the submarket detection method (SDM), which can be used to infer when binding transportation constraints exist by analyzing regional pricing data from a competitive market, and conclude by using the SDM in a case study of the US gasoline market.

Book Spatial Price Discrimination with Heterogeneous Firms

Download or read book Spatial Price Discrimination with Heterogeneous Firms written by Jonathan Vogel and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we present and solve a three-stage game of entry, location, and pricing in a spatial price discrimination framework with arbitrarily many heterogeneous firms. We provide a unique characterization of all pure undominated strategy SPNE without imposing restrictions on the distribution of marginal costs or the allocation of transportation costs between firms and consumers.

Book Dynamic Price Competition with Capacity Constraints and a Strategic Buyer

Download or read book Dynamic Price Competition with Capacity Constraints and a Strategic Buyer written by James J. Anton and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze a simple dynamic durable good model. Two incumbent sellers and potential entrants choose their capacities at the start of the game. We solve for equilibrium capacity choices and the (necessarily mixed) pricing strategies. In equilibrium, the buyer splits the order with positive probability to preserve competition, making it possible that a high and low price seller both have sales. Sellers command a rent above the value of unmet demand by the other seller. A buyer benefits from either a commitment not to make future purchases or by hiring an agent to always buy from the lowest priced seller.

Book Competitive Price Discrimination

Download or read book Competitive Price Discrimination written by Mark Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We model firms as supplying utility directly to consumers. The equilibrium outcome of competition in utility space depends on the relationship pi(u) between profit and average utility per consumer. Public policy constraints on the "deals" firms may offer affect equilibrium outcomes via their effect on pi(u). From this perspective we examine the profit, utility, and welfare implications of price discrimination policies in an oligopolistic framework. We also show that an equilibrium outcome of competitive nonlinear pricing when consumers have private information about their tastes is for firms to offer efficient two-part tariffs.
