Book Airport Competition

Download or read book Airport Competition written by Peter Forsyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The break-up of BAA and the blocked takeover of Bratislava airport by the competing Vienna airport have brought the issue of airport competition to the top of the agenda for air transport policy in Europe. Airport Competition reviews the current state of the debate and asks whether airport competition is strong enough to effectively limit market power. It provides evidence on how travellers chose an airport, thereby altering its competitive position, and on how airports compete in different regions and markets. The book also discusses the main policy implications of mergers and subsidies.

Book Competition versus Predation in Aviation Markets

Download or read book Competition versus Predation in Aviation Markets written by Peter Forsyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to liberalization, there was little scope for predatory behaviour in the aviation market. However, following deregulation, new entrants sought to compete with entrenched incumbents. Low-cost carriers (LCCs) gained significant market share, which in turn provoked many different kinds of defensive response. Having put pressure on established carriers, low-cost airlines are themselves feeling the pressure of competition from new operators. While it is normal and natural for airlines to react to competition - modifying their services, the ways in which they offer them and their prices - when does aggressive commercial behaviour go too far and become predation? This book considers what exactly is meant by 'predation' in the aviation environment, and explores the strategies LCCs adopt in order to gain market share, as well as the strategies of the established airlines in response to competition from new entrants to the market. It also addresses the key question of what competition policy should do to ensure intensive competition. Competition versus Predation in Aviation Markets brings together contributions from around the world, from airlines, government agencies, leading academics and consultants, providing a wealth of perspectives on a business practice crucial to airline survival.

Book Competition and Regulation in the Airline Industry

Download or read book Competition and Regulation in the Airline Industry written by Steven Truxal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the relationship between competition and the deregulation and liberalisation of the US and European air transport sectors reveals that the structure of the air transport sector has undergone a number of significant changes. A growing number of airlines are entering into horizontal and vertical cooperative arrangements and integration including franchising, codeshare agreements, alliances, ‘virtual mergers’ and in some cases, mergers with other airlines, groups of airlines or other complementary lines of business such as airports. This book considers the current legal issues affecting the air transport sector incorporating recent developments in the industry, including the end of certain exemptions from EU competition rules, the effect of the EU-US Open Skies Agreement, the accession of new EU Member States and the Lisbon Treaty. The book explores the differing European and US regulatory approaches to the changes in the industry and examines how airlines have remained economically efficient in what is perceived as a complex and confused regulatory environment. Competition and Regulation in the Airline Industry will be of particular interest to academics and students of competition law as well as EU law.

Book Liberalization in Aviation

Download or read book Liberalization in Aviation written by Hartmut Wolf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few decades have witnessed substantial liberalization trends in various industries and countries. Starting with the deregulation of the US airline industry in 1978, regulatory restructuring took place in further network industries such as telecommunications, electricity or railways in various countries around the world. Although most of the liberalization movements were initially triggered by the worrying performances of the respective regulatory frameworks, increases in competition and corresponding improvements in allocative and productive efficiency were typically associated with the respective liberalization efforts. From an academic perspective, the transition from regulated industries to liberalized industries has attracted a substantial amount of research reflected in many books and research articles which can be distilled to three main questions: (1) What are the forces that have given rise to regulatory reform? (2) What is the structure of the regulatory change which has occurred to date and is likely to occur in the immediate future? (3) What have been the effects on industry efficiency, prices and profits of the reforms which have occurred to date? Liberalization in Aviation brings together renowned academics and practitioners from around the world to address all three questions and draw policy conclusions. The book is divided into five sections, in turn dealing with aspects of competition in various liberalized markets, the emergence and growth of low-cost carriers, horizontal mergers and alliances, infrastructures, and concluding with economic assessments of liberalization steps so far and proposed steps in the future.

Book Efficiency and Competitiveness of International Airlines

Download or read book Efficiency and Competitiveness of International Airlines written by Almas Heshmati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the factors that support the strengths of international airlines in general and the Asian airline carriers in particular. Defining the quality of human capital as the level of education and the competence of airline employees, it analyzes the efficiency of 39 airlines in various regions, both in terms of production and cost structures. It argues that, despite Asia’s well-developed and globally competitive manufacturing sector, aided by open market practices, its overall service sector still lags far behind more advanced economies. As this does not stop Asia-based carriers from generally being more efficient than their counterparts in Europe and North America, the book investigates how competitiveness analysis of the airline industry can help Asian policymakers better prepare for the liberalization of the service sector, given how crucial this aspect is for the future growth of the Asia-Pacific region. Efficiency and Competitiveness of International Airlines offers a valuable resource for policymakers, airline employees, and researchers and students of microeconomics.

Book The Influence of Differing Market Characteristics on Lufthansa s Strategies and Operations

Download or read book The Influence of Differing Market Characteristics on Lufthansa s Strategies and Operations written by Andreas Rostin and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Georgetown University, course: International Business, 21 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The airline industry has historically been an extremely volatile and in general unprofitable industry. According to financial reports compiled by the International Air Transport Association and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aggregate industry-wide operating losses for the period 1985-2003 totaled $11.7 billion. Not all airlines, however, have been responsible for this poor overall performance. In the past ten years, Lufthansa German Airlines (Deutsche Lufthansa AG) has transformed itself from a struggling state-owned carrier into one of the most profitable airlines worldwide by positioning itself in the upper echelon of the lucrative premium travel market. Serving as an indicator for this successful transformation, Air Transport World - the leading monthly magazine covering the global airline industry - selected Lufthansa as its "Airline of the Year" for both 1994 and 2000. This paper will analyze Lufthansa's award-winning business model by focusing on the airline's position in its three major markets: the European Union, the North Atlantic and China. After briefly outlining the current state of the airline industry in general and presenting a short company profile of Lufthansa, it will look into the following questions: In what way do differing economic, political and social conditions influence Lufthansa's strategic decisions in its home market - the European Union - in comparison to the North Atlantic market? When giving answers to this question, the paper will focus particularly on competition distortion stemming from heavy U.S. government involvement in the airline industry and what measures Lufthansa has taken in order to gain a competitive advantage over its U.S. counterparts. It will then turn its
