Download or read book A Compendium Christian Theology Vol 2 written by William Burt Pope and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium Christian Theology, Vol. 2: Being Analytical Outlines of a Course of Theological Study, Biblical, Dogmatic, Historical The discussion of Providence has exhibited Sin, the destruction of which was the object of the redeeming counsel, as contemplated from eternity in connection with the origin, development, and destiny of mankind. It is therefore as a doctrine interwoven with all the subsequent stages of theology, being in fact one centre from which the whole may be viewed. But it has its own range of independent topics, making it a distinct study. We ascend first to the mystery of its Origin, in the universe and on earth, this leading of necessity to the consideration of its Nature in itself and of the Theories devised to account for it; then follows the relation between Sin and Redemption, or rather the mitigating effect that the coming redemption throws back upon the evolution of evil; thus introducing, finally, its universality in mankind, or Original Sin, the sin adhering to the race as such and to every member of it naturally born into the world. It is useful to note these terms, though they are not much used in English theology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the Long View argues in a series of engagingly written essays that remembering the past is essential for men and women who want to function effectively in the present--for without some knowledge of their own past, neither individuals nor institutions know where they have been or where they are going. The book illustrates its thesis with tough-minded examples from the Church's life and thought, ranging from more abstract problems like the theoretical role of historical criticism to such painfully concrete issues as the commandment of Jesus to forgive unforgivable wrongs.

Book Understanding Biblical Theology

Download or read book Understanding Biblical Theology written by Edward W Klink III and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Biblical Theology clarifies the catch-all term “biblical theology,” a movement that tries to remove the often-held dichotomy between biblical studies for the Church and as an academic pursuit. This book examines the five major schools of thought regarding biblical theology and handles each in turn, defining and giving a brief developmental history for each one, and exploring each method through the lens of one contemporary scholar who champions it. Using a spectrum between history and theology, each of five “types” of biblical theology are identified as either “more theological” or “more historical” in concern and practice: Biblical Theology as Historical Description (James Barr) Biblical Theology as History of Redemption (D. A. Carson) Biblical Theology as Worldview-Story (N. T. Wright) Biblical Theology as Canonical Approach (Brevard Childs) Biblical Theology as Theological Construction (Francis Watson). A conclusion suggests how any student of the Bible can learn from these approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of Christian Theology It might be of use to young men candidates for the Ministry, if any such are to be found, who have not attained to a thorough knowledge of the Latin Language. In particular, it might improve my own mind, as it tends to inspire the most elevated conceptions of Religion and Virtue. Now though I look on such an undertaking as truely laudible, yet a certain self-diffidence intervenes, which does not indeed proceed so much from any consciousness I entertain of my ignorance of either the Author's language, or meaning, but rather from a jealousy of my not being so much master of English, as might enable me to do justice to so glorious an Author; an Author, the iublimity of whose sentiments, merit the most masterly strokes of the finest pen, put into the hands of, the most enlarged, and refined genius. Being thus embarrassed by this obsticle, I thought proper, Sir, to apply unto you, whose situation in life must, in an eminent degree, render you acquainted with literature, for your candid advice. New, in order that you may be the better judge, and determine in this case, I have sent you a specimen of the intended translation, with the original, which I hope you will peruse, and compare together, and after perusal, and comparison, frankly tell your mind. If your judgment is in my favour, I shall with the greater ardor proceed, if otherwise, I shall bear matters, with a philosophical patience, I had almost said a stoical apathy.
