Download or read book Agricultural Values of Plant Genetic Resources written by Robert Eugene Evenson and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International concern over the threat to species and ecosystems caused by human activities is at an all time high, which may result in high costs to present and future generations. The economic costs and benefits associated with the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources of actual or potential value for food and agriculture is largely unknown. Economic instruments that can encourage implementation of socially optimal genetic resource conservation strategies as well as the sharing of the real benefits and costs are a useful measurement tool. This book is an edited compilation of papers from the Symposium on the Economics of Valuation and Conservation of Genetic Resources for Agriculture held in Rome in May 1996. It addresses some of the key issues involved in the estimation of the economic value of conserving genetic resources for agriculture. It covers the modelling of the value of Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs), empirical studies of PGRs (including field diversity and yield vulnerability), seven empirical studies of PGR breeding values, property rights in PGRs and the implications of modern biotechnology methods for PGR values. The book will be essential reading for workers in agricultural economics, plant breeding and genetics, and biodiversity and conservation.

Download or read book Recent Advances in Crop Physiology written by Amrit Lal Singh and published by Daya Publishing House. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global food demand is expected to be doubled by 2050, while production, environment and natural resources are shrinking and deteriorating. Inadequate attention to agriculture across the larger part of the world has led to steep rise in food prices and increased food riots pushing about 100 million more people into poverty. More than one billion people already are earning less than one dollar a day, and 842 million are suffering from hunger. Majority of them live in rural areas, and are largely dependent on agriculture. The climate change and diversion of arable lands to urbanization and industrialization has further aggravated food crisis. On the other hand, with recent technologies, there is tremendous development in agriculture and productivity during the last two decades and it is hoped that with ingenuity, determination and innovative partnerships among everyone, we can meet the food needs of 9 billion people by 2050 without harming our planet. Using tools and technologies that allow farmers to apply nutrients more precisely at lower cost, improved seeds with less water and nutrients, new fertilizers, site specific nutrient management, effectively placed wetlands and buffers, and cover crops, we can meet the intertwined needs of environmental sustainability and rising food demand. However, all these informations are scattered and need to be compiled and circulated widely. This series on "Recent Advances in Crop Physiology" is an effort in this direction, which will act as a reference for directly implementing the technologies and to help the researchers for planning their future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic farming is a new revolution in agriculture on a global scale. This has come in wake of realization of ill effects of Green Revolution. This book has given description of adverse effects of chemicals used in agriculture and the urgent need to switch to organic farming by the use of biofertilizers and adopting biocontrol measures. Organic farming is a sustainable option where cheap and ecofriendly biofertilizers are produced by farmers and scientists using various micro organisms such as bacteria, algae and fungi. Green pest management practices using biocontrol agents for minimising the crop loss due to insect pests is extensively described in this book. The authors have also dealt with the different measures adopted in India to popularize the use of biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. The book focuses attention on present day challenge of attaining sustainable agriculture without damaging the environment.

Download or read book Radiation Safety of Accelerator Based Radioisotope Production Facilities written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioisotopes are used worldwide in a range of medical, industrial, research and academic applications. A large proportion of these radioisotopes are produced in particle accelerators, and the number of institutions that operate linear accelerators or cyclotrons and manufacture and distribute radiopharmaceuticals, for example, is significant and increasing. The production of radioisotopes using particle accelerators poses significant radiation hazards to workers, members of the public, and the environment when accelerators are operated without adequate radiation safety measures. This Safety Guide provides practical guidance for implementing radiation protection and safety measures in such facilities involved in the production and use of radioisotopes.

Download or read book Fundamentals of Agronomy written by Venera S. Kamburova and published by . This book was released on 2018-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agronomy deals with the science and technology of producing and using plants for food, fuel, fiber, and land reclamation. The importance of agronomy provides farmers with agricultural information about how to grow and care for plants and soils in certain environments. Factors such as climate, roots, moisture, weeds, pests, fungi, and erosion can pose significant challenges when farmers attempt to produce a plentiful harvest. In order to discover ways of integrating crops into the environment in ways that will allow them to prosper, agronomists study these agricultural hurdles. Throughout history, scientific and technological advances have greatly impacted the agriculture industry. Early farmers improved their crop production by inventing the first hoes. Today, farmers improve crop production through the use of global positioning systems (GPS). How did these changes happen? How did people learn about new ideas? How have these ideas changed farming methods? In recent times, research and development in this area have made innovations in farming products and practices.Fundamentals Of Agronomy presents the comprehensive coverage in the pursuit of improving the yield of crops, protecting crops against diseases and pest, making livestock healthy all the time, designing the best method of crops storage and even helping in predicting the climate conducive for agricultural practice cannot be over emphasized. Crop protection is very vital in agriculture. Disease affects plants and leads to delay in metabolic activities, stunted growth, shedding of flowers and fruits and sometimes the actual death of the plant. Cultural and chemical controls are most of the time used. Culturally, crop rotation is adopted, burning remains after harvesting, regular weeding of the soil, proper spacing of crops using of high yielding and resistant varieties and practicing of irrigation during dry season are adopted. This book will be of interest to students, professional practitioners, educators, and advisers who work directly with farmers, companies, and others in the agriculture community to implement the latest methods and tools for growing crops profitably and sustainably.
Download or read book The Prospects for Democracy in India written by K. L. Shrimali and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly informative book is perhaps the first book written for American students of international education, comparative education, and government by an Indian scholar familiar with both cultures. Dr. Shrimali received his Ph.D. from Teachers' College, Columbia University, and has taught in this country. What he has to say about education in the land of Dharma is as valuable as it is interesting. By democracy, Dr. Shrimali means education, which he equates with freedom and equal opportunity. Dr. Shrimali highlights the major problems of his country--population, culture, and politics--in discussing, in some detail, India's modern history since separation, and he pays special attention to Indian characteristics and institutions which, he feels, have hindered India's development as a nation. Highly critical of the English heritage in India, Dr. Shrimali offers scant hope for democracy in India unless there is radical change in some of her institutions.
