Book excerpt: Compendium of documents on National Human Rights Institutions in eastern and southern Africa Edited by Charles M Fombad 2019 ISBN: 978-1-920538-95-8 Pages: 898 Print version: Available Electronic version: Free PDF available About the publication Africa’s increasing recognition and protection of human rights have been accompanied by a surge in the number of NHRIs established with broad mandates to promote and protect human rights. The mandates and powers of the NHRIs vary from country to country, as does their ability to deliver on these mandates. Indeed, the rapid increase in the number of NHRIs in Africa has come with a variety of substantive and operational challenges. In the face of such challenges, those who work in NHRIs need to understand the broader regional and global context in which the institutions operate and the changing nature of human rights issues. This compendium provides an overview of NHRIs in eastern and southern Africa. It is guided to a large extent by the internationally agreed-upon Principles Relating to the Status of National Institutions, referred to as the Paris Principles. These Principles are broadly accepted as the benchmark against which the legitimacy and credibility of NHRIs can be assessed. Endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, the Paris Principles provide NHRIs with guidelines as to their competence and responsibilities, their composition and guarantees of independence and pluralism, and their methods of operation; additional principles relate to the status of commissions with quasi-jurisdictional competence. The generous financial support of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Rule of Law for Sub-Saharan Africa, Nairobi, Kenya office, is gratefully acknowledged. Book Agricultural Compendium

Download or read book Agricultural Compendium written by Euroconsult (Organization) and published by . This book was released on 1989-04 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like its predecessors, this third revised edition of the Agricultural Compendium is packed with a wealth of statistical and general information about almost every aspect of agriculture in the tropics and subtropics. "Anyone in tropical rural development, whether in a technical capacity or as an economist/planner making use of technical results, would both save themselves time and increase their understanding and efficiency through possession of this compendium. It is not only a reference volume but potentially a major contribution to mutual understanding and therefore communication between different disciplines." commented Soil Survey and Land Evaluation after the publication of an earlier edition. Numerous sections (e.g. Chapter 7, Part B - Fisheries) and even complete chapters (e.g. Chapter 3, Geodosy; Chapter 10, Sociology) have been rewritten for the present edition. A number of new sections have also been added (e.g. in Chapter 3, a section on remote sensing techniques). Furthermore, in view of the now common use of scientific pocket calculators and personal computers, a number of graphs have been replaced by the original formulae.

Book Community Paralegals and the Pursuit of Justice

Download or read book Community Paralegals and the Pursuit of Justice written by Vivek Maru and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations estimates that four billion people worldwide live outside the protection of the law. These people can be driven from their land, intimidated by violence, and excluded from society. This book is about community paralegals - sometimes called barefoot lawyers - who demystify law and empower people to advocate for themselves. These paralegals date back to 1950s South Africa and are active today in many countries, but their role has largely been ignored by researchers. Community Paralegals and the Pursuit of Justice is the first book on the subject. Focusing on paralegal movements in six countries, Vivek Maru, Varun Gauri, and their coauthors have collected rich, vivid stories of paralegals helping people to take on injustice, from domestic violence to unlawful mining to denial of wages. From these stories emerges evidence of what works and how. The insights in the book will be of immense value in the global fight for universal justice. This title is also available as Open Access.
