Book Compendium of Christian Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Compendium of Christian Theology Classic Reprint written by John Frederik Osterwald and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of Christian Theology It might be of use to young men candidates for the Ministry, if any such are to be found, who have not attained to a thorough knowledge of the Latin Language. In particular, it might improve my own mind, as it tends to inspire the most elevated conceptions of Religion and Virtue. Now though I look on such an undertaking as truely laudible, yet a certain self-diffidence intervenes, which does not indeed proceed so much from any consciousness I entertain of my ignorance of either the Author's language, or meaning, but rather from a jealousy of my not being so much master of English, as might enable me to do justice to so glorious an Author; an Author, the iublimity of whose sentiments, merit the most masterly strokes of the finest pen, put into the hands of, the most enlarged, and refined genius. Being thus embarrassed by this obsticle, I thought proper, Sir, to apply unto you, whose situation in life must, in an eminent degree, render you acquainted with literature, for your candid advice. New, in order that you may be the better judge, and determine in this case, I have sent you a specimen of the intended translation, with the original, which I hope you will peruse, and compare together, and after perusal, and comparison, frankly tell your mind. If your judgment is in my favour, I shall with the greater ardor proceed, if otherwise, I shall bear matters, with a philosophical patience, I had almost said a stoical apathy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematic Theology: A Compendium and Commonplace-Book Designed for the Use of Theological Students Systematic Theology, first published in 1886. Of the original work there have been printed seven editions, each edition embody ing successive corrections and supposed improvements. During the twenty years which have intervened since its first publication I have accumulated much new material, which I now offer to the reader. My philosophical and critical point of view meantime has also somewhat changed. While I still hold to the old doctrines, I interpret them differently and expound them more clearly, because I seem to myself to have reached a fundamental truth which throws new light upon them all. This truth I have tried to set forth in my book entitled Christ in Creation, and to that book I refer the reader for further information. Book Christian Dogmatics Vol 12

Download or read book Christian Dogmatics Vol 12 written by H. Martensen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics, Vol. 12: A Compendium of the Doctrines of Christianity The work of the learned and pious Dr Martensen, Bishop of Seeland, in Denmark, which is now presented in an English dress, was originally written in Danish, and has gone through several editions. A German translation of it soon appeared, but the Author not being satisfied with that rendering of his work, re-wrote it himself in German, and the present English version is a translation of this later German edition prepared by Dr Martensen himself. The work is what we call a text-book, or manual of Chris tian Dogma; and while here and there the English reader may perceive a degree of abstruseness in the method of treat ing certain doctrines, the Doctrine of the Trinity, for example, - which is only a reflection of the profoundness of the Author's thought, he will find throughout, a clearness and conciseness, not always to be met with in German theo logical works. Book The Christian Doctrine of Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Faith Classic Reprint written by James Hastings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. Book Christian Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Theology Classic Reprint written by Adam Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Theology For some years before the lamented death of Dr. Clarke, he was repeatedly solicited to collect his rich and ample materials, and give to the world a Biblical Dictionary; and Theological Institutes, or a System of Christian Theology, in one or two portable and cheap volumes. He acknowledged that each of these was a great desideramm. He felt strongly inclined to prepare them, and even made a beginning. In one of his letters he writes I have laid the foundation of a Biblical Dictionary. In another he says I may possibly write some Institutes; but I shall put my Homer into a nutshell. On another occasion he observed: If you were stationed in the south, and would assist me, I could do many things, but my eyes will not now bear any intense application. Such an appointment never took place; and before the worthy doctor had proceeded far, he was called hence. Had he accomplished his oh ject, he would doubtless have produced a volume de serving a place in every Christian library. If it be inquired what induced me to attempt to supply his lack; I answer, my strong affection for the man my high ad miration of his writings my deep conviction that such a volume would probably prove a blessing to many; and I may perhaps, in proof of the doctor's confidence and affection, be allowed to refer to the following passage in one of his letters, which to me is sufficiently affecting: 0 that my strength were as in days that are past! While writing, it seems as if whispered to me, 'your time is at hand - Samuel Dunn shall be your proxy in my work.' This is enough! Though painfully con scious of great inability, I have done what I could. Others will judge of the manner in which the part of selecting and systeniatizing has been executed. That this manual will be found useful for the purpose of reference, to those individuals who possess the doc tor's other works and that those who possess them not will be induced, from this specimen, to procure them as soon as possible, is, perhaps, not an unreasonable ex pectation. The unrivalled Commentary, which is now in course of publication in an elegant and cheap form, with multitudinous emendations and corrections from the author's own and last hand, - I should like to see in every family, from the Norman to the Shetland Isles. Book Plain Theology for Plain People

Download or read book Plain Theology for Plain People written by Charles Octavius Boothe and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Book The New Theology Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Theology This book has been undertaken at the request of number of my friends who feel that recent criticisms of what has come to be called New Theology ought to be dealt with in some comprehensive and systematic way. With this suggestion my own judgment concurs, but only so far as my own pulpit teaching is concerned. I cannot pretend to speak for anyone else, and therefore this monograph must not be understood as an authoritative exposition of the views held and expounded by other preachers who may be in sympathy with the New Theology. From its very nature, as I hope the following pages will show, the New Theology cannot be a creed, but its adherents have a common stand point. My only reason for calling this book by that title is that a considerable section of the public at present persists in regarding me as in a special way the exponent of it; indeed from the correspondence which has been proceeding in the press it is evident that many people credit me with having invented both the name and the thing. Book The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation Classic Reprint written by Albrecht Ritschl and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation There is reason to believe that an English translation of Ritschl'8 greatest work is not inopportune at the present moment The attention paid in Britain to this theologian's doctrinal system has been steadily deepening for some years. Such works as Denney's Studies in Theology, Orr's The llitschlian Theology and the Evangelical Faith, and Game's The Ritschlian Theology, are enough to prove how profound is the interest felt here in the methods and conclusions of a movement which has had so remarkable an influence in Germany. Of this movement the primary source was Ritschl's monumental work, The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation (1870-1874). Not since Schleiermacher published his Christliche Glaube in 1821 has any dogmatic treatise left its mark so deeply upon theological thought in Germany and throughout the world. Schleiermacher's masterpiece, unfortunately, is inaccessible to the English reader; and it was felt that were the magnum opus of his most notable successor also to remain untranslated, the loss to English students of theology would be doubly regrettable. The first volume of the German work, containing the history of the doctrine, was published in an English rendering as far back as 1872. The third volume, of which a translation is now furnished for the first time, has the supreme interest of presenting us with Ritschl's own theological system.
