Book Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk

Download or read book Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk written by Suzanne H. Reuben and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years, cancer continues to devastate the lives of far too many Americans. In 2009 alone, 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. There is a growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer. The Pres. Cancer Panel dedicated its 2008¿2009 activities to examining the impact of environmental factors on cancer risk. The Panel considered industrial, occupational, and agricultural exposures as well as exposures related to medical practice, military activities, modern lifestyles, and natural sources. This report presents the Panel¿s recommend. to mitigate or eliminate these barriers. Illus.

Book Particle Overload In The Rat Lung And Lung Cancer

Download or read book Particle Overload In The Rat Lung And Lung Cancer written by Robert J McCunney and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-06-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent inhalation toxicology studies suggest that when laboratory rats are exposed to inorganic particles to the point that lung overload occurs, both benign and malignant tumours may develop. The significance of these results for estimating human risk, however, is unclear.; Originally published as a special issue of the journal "Inhalation Toxicology", the contributions to this volume are derived from a symposium held in March, 1995, by the Environmental Medical Service of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Topics addressed include epidemiology, the pathology of lung tumours, maximum tolerated doses in inhalation toxicology studies, risk assessment, the extrapolation of results from animal studies to humans, current modelling techniques and regulatory concerns.

Book excerpt: This guide to the structure, function and mechanism of the cytochromes P450 focuses on the role of P450s in xenobiotic metabolism and toxicity. Colour illustrations show how modelling of P450s can rationalize their substrate specificity for the metabolism of both endogenous and exogenous chemicals.

Book Long Term Study Reports and Abstracts

Download or read book Long Term Study Reports and Abstracts written by National Toxicology Program (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Toxicology Program (NTP) is an interagency program within the Public Health Service (PHS) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and is headquartered at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (NIEHS/NIH). Three agencies contribute resources to the program: NIEHS/NIH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (NIOSH/CDC), and the National Center for Toxicological Research of the Food and Drug Administration (NCTR/FDA). Established in 1978, the NTP is charged with coordinating toxicological testing activities, strengthening the science base in toxicology, developing and validating improved testing methods, and providing information about potentially toxic substances to health regulatory and research agencies, scientific and medical communities, and the public. The Technical Report series began in 1976 with carcinogenesis studies conducted by the National Cancer Institute. In 1981, this bioassay program was transferred to the NTP. A report number was not assigned to the first two bioassay reports (January and March, 1976) because they were published prior to the initiation of the numbering system. Numbering began in on the February, 1976 report. The title change began in 1980 - no. 202-205 were issued in 1980 with the earlier title. The studies described in the Technical Report series are designed and conducted to characterize and evaluate the toxicologic potential, including carcinogenic activity, of selected substances in laboratory animals (usually two species, rats and mice). Substances selected for NTP toxicity and carcinogenicity studies are chosen primarily on the basis of human exposure, level of production, and chemical structure. The interpretive conclusions presented in NTP Technical Reports are based only on the results of these NTP studies. Extrapolation of these results to other species, including characterization of hazards and risks to humans, requires analyses beyond the intent of these reports.

Book Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals

Download or read book Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A respected resource for decades, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals has been updated by a committee of experts, taking into consideration input from the scientific and laboratory animal communities and the public at large. The Guide incorporates new scientific information on common laboratory animals, including aquatic species, and includes extensive references. It is organized around major components of animal use: Key concepts of animal care and use. The Guide sets the framework for the humane care and use of laboratory animals. Animal care and use program. The Guide discusses the concept of a broad Program of Animal Care and Use, including roles and responsibilities of the Institutional Official, Attending Veterinarian and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Animal environment, husbandry, and management. A chapter on this topic is now divided into sections on terrestrial and aquatic animals and provides recommendations for housing and environment, husbandry, behavioral and population management, and more. Veterinary care. The Guide discusses veterinary care and the responsibilities of the Attending Veterinarian. It includes recommendations on animal procurement and transportation, preventive medicine (including animal biosecurity), and clinical care and management. The Guide addresses distress and pain recognition and relief, and issues surrounding euthanasia. Physical plant. The Guide identifies design issues, providing construction guidelines for functional areas; considerations such as drainage, vibration and noise control, and environmental monitoring; and specialized facilities for animal housing and research needs. The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals provides a framework for the judgments required in the management of animal facilities. This updated and expanded resource of proven value will be important to scientists and researchers, veterinarians, animal care personnel, facilities managers, institutional administrators, policy makers involved in research issues, and animal welfare advocates.
