Cuándo ni'cuánto tiempo estuviese en'méjico, no lo podemos decir: probablemente estaría allí de paso para estas Islas, como hacían entonces los que de España ve nlan de a ellas, quienes solían tocar en Acapulco; aunque acaso el Padre se detendría más ó menos tiempo, y recorrería algún tanto aquellas tie rras, porque habla también de muchas cosas de allá como de propia experiencia. Parece que tenía ya treinta y cuatr° años de país, cuando c°menzó a escribir su obra en Guiguan en 1751; continuóla en Palapag, y la terminó (se entiende, la parte que conocemos y ahora se publica) el 6 de Junio de 17 54. Basta leerle para descubrir en él excelentes cuali dades de carácter, virtud y talento. Debió de ser muy leído y erudito, oh servador atento y diligente, de felicísima memoria y de criterio recto, pronto' y seguro. Con la misma soltura y decisión habla de unas ma terias que de otras, no solamente de las que trata ex pro/essa, sino de cua lesquiera que con ellas se relacionen, ó que le vengan a él á cuento, aunque heterogéneas de su profesión y estudi°s análogos a ella: lo mismo habla de marinería, fortalezas, tribunales, negocios de comercio, y lo mismo trae á colación los textos de los autores pr°fanos; que aduce los textos sagrados, ó trata de las razas, plantas y frutos. Revela igualmente mucha piedad y grande entusiasmo patrio, especial amor a sus súbditos espirituales, vivo celo por la recta administraciónfy__prosperidad de estas Islas; y se muestrd paladín defensor de los quiera que los rebaje ó menosprecie. Estuv° muy bien relábionado con toda clase de personas; tuvo buena amistad con el famoso Sr. Obispo de Cebú, D. Protasio Cabezas, y trató y comunicó aficiones y conocimientos natu ralistas con los célebres P. Clain y Dr. Jorge Camel, Sacerdote el pri mero y* Hermano Coadjutor el segundo de nuestra Compañía.
