Quiza por la misma espontaneidad yautonomia de cada espiritu, podran en este colectivo trabajo investigarse, analizarse y explicarse por mas intensa manera los hechos, ya anteriores, ya posteriores, que se relacionan con el cardinal hecho de que trato. Materia vasta, vastisima; mas no por eso desigual a las combinadas fuerzas del Ateneo, y de los que en esta ocasion contamos por aliados. Y ya que no nos sea posible desempenarla con aquel sumo sentido que en susultimas y trascendentales lucubraciones pide la historia, tal vez aqui logremos una ventaja diferente y peculiar a las monogra fias o estudios de sucesos particulares, es a saber: que sea ma yor la riqueza de las observaciones. Ni estas han de limitarse al descubrimiento en sus principios, que quedaria a medias la obra, sino que han de extenderse a su desarrollo sucesivo, es decir, a la conquista, y aun al estudio pasado y presente del nuevo orbe descubierto.
