Book Compelled to Appear in Print

Download or read book Compelled to Appear in Print written by John Clifford Pemberton and published by Ironclad Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John C Pemberton, the Confederate officer who surrendered Vicksburg MS to US Grant in July 1863, is not remembered as one of the South's elite generals. When his commander, Joseph E Johnston, published his wartime memoirs in 1874, he laid the blame for Vicksburg's loss squarely at the feet of Pemberton and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Although Davis eventually had his say in his memoirs, Pemberton never did. Or so historians thought. Pemberton had, indeed, penned a response to Johnston, but it was never published and lay forgotten for over 100 years until it finally came to light in a 1995 estate sale in Cincinnati, OH. "Compelled to Appear in Print" allows one of the war's most famous scapegoats to tell his side of the story that history has, until now, seen only through the eyes of his main antagonist.

Book Bound to Last

Download or read book Bound to Last written by Sean Manning and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lovers of the printed book, arise! Thirty of today’s top writers are here to tell you you’re not alone. In Bound to Last,an amazing array of authors comes to the passionate defense of the printed book with spirited, never-before-published essays celebrating the hardcover or paperback they hold most dear—not necessarily because of its contents, but because of its significance as a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable object. Whether focusing on the circumstances behind how a particular book was acquired, or how it has become forever “bound up” with a specific person, time, or place, each piece collected here confirms—poignantly, delightfully, irrefutably—that every book tells a story far beyond the one found within its pages. In addition to a foreword by Ray Bradbury, Bound to Last features original contributions by:Chris Abani, Rabih Alameddine, Anthony Doerr, Louis Ferrante, Nick Flynn, Karen Joy Fowler, Julia Glass, Karen Green, David Hajdu, Terrence Holt, Jim Knipfel, Shahriar Mandanipour, Sarah Manguso, Sean Manning, Joyce Maynard, Philipp Meyer, Jonathan Miles, Sigrid Nunez, Ed Park, Victoria Patterson, Francine Prose, Michael Ruhlman, Elissa Schappell, Christine Schutt, Jim Shepard, Susan Straight, J.
