Book Standards Policy for Information Infrastructure

Download or read book Standards Policy for Information Infrastructure written by Brian Kahin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are many competing visions of information infrastructure, there is universal agreement that standards will play a critical role. The history of OSI, the Internet, and industry consortia shows that standards development has become a rich, multifaceted process, critically linked to market strategy and major issues of public policy. The thirty-three contributions to this book present a comprehensive picture of the state of the art in standards development for information technology and the options for federal policy. The book includes both independent analysis and the perspectives of major stakeholders and other interested parties--such as AT&T, the American National Standards Institute, the European Commission, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. Book Coalition Command Control Communications Computer and Intelligence Systems Interoperability A Necessity Or Wishful Thinking

Download or read book Coalition Command Control Communications Computer and Intelligence Systems Interoperability A Necessity Or Wishful Thinking written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines whether coalition command, control, communications, computer, and intelligence (C4I) systems interoperability is the next logical step for the US beyond joint interoperability. This study uses US experiences in the Korean War, DESERT SHIELD/STORM, Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR, plus past research to analyze and establish currents trends, patterns, and gaps in coalition interoperability. It is clear from previous operations and past research that the US, allies, and coalition partners have not mastered coalition C4I systems interoperability. In order to achieve coalition C4I systems interoperability, this study recommends a course of action (COA) to rely on common US C4I systems or adopt common technical standards to ensure coalition interoperability in the acquisition of C4I systems. Adopting this COA allows alliance and coalition partners to either purchase US C4I systems or design and procure C4I systems that will be interoperable based on common technical standards. Future operations will be multinational and coalition interoperability will be paramount to success. Training programs, combined exercises, military-to-military contacts, foreign military sales, coalition doctrine, modularity, the global grid, and Radiant Mercury (a tool for multilevel security) formulate conditions for success, thus making coalition interoperability the next logical step beyond joint interoperability when designing, procuring, and build US C4I systems.

Book Realizing the Potential of C4I

Download or read book Realizing the Potential of C4I written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid progress in information and communications technologies is dramatically enhancing the strategic role of information, positioning effective exploitation of these technology advances as a critical success factor in military affairs. These technology advances are drivers and enablers for the "nervous system" of the militaryâ€"its command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systemsâ€"to more effectively use the "muscle" side of the military. Authored by a committee of experts drawn equally from the military and commercial sectors, Realizing the Potential of C4I identifies three major areas as fundamental challenges to the full Department of Defense (DOD) exploitation of C4I technologyâ€"information systems security, interoperability, and various aspects of DOD process and culture. The book details principles by which to assess DOD efforts in these areas over the long term and provides specific, more immediately actionable recommendations. Although DOD is the focus of this book, the principles and issues presented are also relevant to interoperability, architecture, and security challenges faced by government as a whole and by large, complex public and private enterprises across the economy.

Book Joint Military Operations DoD s Renewed Emphasis on Interoperability is Important But Not Adequate

Download or read book Joint Military Operations DoD s Renewed Emphasis on Interoperability is Important But Not Adequate written by GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE WASHINGTON DC NATIONAL SECURITY AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987 report, the General Accounting Office we identified various problems and made recommendations associated with the Department of Defense's (DoD) efforts to achieve command, control and communications (C3) systems interoperability-the ability of systems, units, or forces to exchange services, enabling them to operate effectively together. DoD concurred with recommendations regarding certification, waiver, and funding matters and stated that it needed to improve interoperability in certain areas and had established mechanisms to do so. This letter discusses DoD's efforts to overcome persisting interoperability problems. Our focus was on System (equipment) and operational (doctrine, tactics, procedures, and training) interoperability associated with command control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I).

Book From Vision to Interoperability

Download or read book From Vision to Interoperability written by Joseph M. Maiorana and published by . This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an assessment of Department of Defense (DoD) and service initiatives to ensure joint interoperability of Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C41) systems. Using a consolidated initiative matrix, visions and actions are reviewed to identify intent, and existing documents used by C41 system planners, designers, and developers are assessed against essential system development criteria, required baseline actions, to achieve interoperability. Findings reveal that interoperability development guidance and tools do not address mission-specific parameters of C4I systems. Not all C4I systems are the same. Mission-specific requirements dictate whether a system is interoperable or not. The current interoperability definition is quite vague for mission-specific systems, and existing DoD and service initiatives only address general guidance to focus system development. Common mission-specific cases are provided and demonstrate that achieving interoperability is more than general guidance and more than the ability to pass data or information through seamless interfaces to ensure that systems are functional. Interoperability must be further defined by analyzing a C41 system's unique mission. Finally, to guide C41 system design, a framework to establish quantifiable thresholds is developed and presented using existing joint doctrine.
