Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical issue in the design of large floating structures such as those being considered in the Mobile Offshore Base (MOB) effort currently being pursued by the U.S. Navy is the nature of the ocean-wave field viewed on scales of 2 km or more. Of prime concern is the ability to assess the spatial coherence of the wave field or the probability of occurrence of long, unbroken wave crests for various environmental conditions. This report describes an effort to use satellite-based synthetic-aperture radar images to determine the crest-length statistics for ocean waves. The first portion of the study examined the feasibility of using SAR image data to determine the crest length distribution, which was shown the be directly related to the directional spread of the spectrum. A fully nonlinear SAR model was used in a simulation study to assess the impact of imaging effects on the resulting measures. For the cases examined, the errors in estimated directional spread were generally less than 20-30% and were conservative when the SAR look direction was within 200 of the propagation direction. The errors were shown to increase with increasing significant wave height, increasing directional spread, and increasing angle between the wave propagation direction and the SAR look direction. The second portion of the study developed a methodology to estimate the wave spectrum directly from the SAR-image spectrum via a variational inversion procedure. The methodology was successful, and the results from ERS SAR data indicate that errors in spectral parameters such as the mean wave length and directional spread are strongly dependent on the signal to noise ratio, as measured by the peak image spectral density. Errors become large when the peak spectral density falls below about 10 sq m for ERS SAR data. Above this level, estimates of wave length arid directional spread are accurate to within about 10-20%.

Book Comparison of Polarimetric SAR Techniques for the Measurement of Directional Ocean Wave Spectra

Download or read book Comparison of Polarimetric SAR Techniques for the Measurement of Directional Ocean Wave Spectra written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several methods have been investigated which use fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) data to measure directional ocean wave slope spectra. Independent techniques have been developed to measure wave slopes in the orthogonal SAR (azimuth/range) directions. In this paper, wave spectra measured using two polarimetric methods are investigated. Spectra developed using a) intensity-based polarimetric SAR methods and b) a more recent orientation/alpha angle algorithm are compared. NASA/JPL/AIRSAR L-band data from twosites in California coastal waters have been used.

Book Quantitative Methods for Current Environmental Issues

Download or read book Quantitative Methods for Current Environmental Issues written by Clive W. Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly clear that good quantitative work in the environmental sciences must be genuinely interdisciplinary. This volume, the proceedings of the first combined TIES/SPRUCE conference held at the University of Sheffield in September 2000, well demonstrates the truth of this assertion, highlighting the successful use of both statistics and mathematics in important practical problems. It brings together distinguished scientists and engineers to present the most up-to-date and practical methods for quantitative measurement and prediction and is organised around four themes: - spatial and temporal models and methods; - environmental sampling and standards; - atmosphere and ocean; - risk and uncertainty. Quantitative Methods for Current Environmental Issues is an invaluable resource for statisticians, applied mathematicians and researchers working on environmental problems, and for those in government agencies and research institutes involved in the analysis of environmental issues.

Book Surface Waves and Fluxes

Download or read book Surface Waves and Fluxes written by G.L. Geernaert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Conference on Air-Sea Interaction in January 1986, it was suggested to me by David Larner of Reidel Press that it may be timely for an updated compendium of air-sea interaction theory to be organized, developed, and published. Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MAS EX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.

Book Ocean Surface Waves Their Physics And Prediction 2nd Edition

Download or read book Ocean Surface Waves Their Physics And Prediction 2nd Edition written by Stanislaw Ryszard Massel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Edition: Ocean Surface Waves: Their Physics and Prediction (3rd Edition)The book is an extended and updated edition of the book published in 1996 under the same title (World Scientific, ISBN 9810216866). It contains a very comprehensive and extensive study on surface ocean waves induced by wind, earthquakes and possible landslides and asteroids impacts. The basic mathematical principles, physical description of the observed phenomena, practical forecasting techniques of the various wave parameters and extended application in ocean and coastal engineering, are discussed from the stochastic point of view. All chapters were completely rewritten and supplemented with many new discoveries which were published since the first edition in 1996. In particular, new chapters are added on very interesting and contemporary topics such as: wave breaking mechanisms in deep- and shallow water, freak waves, tsunami, water circulation in porous sea bottom induced by surface waves, and waves propagation through mangrove forests. In terms of numerical modeling, the state of the art of the modern methodology of wave prediction models WAM and SWAN, as well as of the high sophisticated satellite methods of waves measurement and modern methods of signal processing, including wavelets approach and Hilbert Transform approach are presented. The book is supplemented with an extended list of relevant and extended, contemporary bibliography, subject index and author index.

Book Inverse Methods in Electromagnetic Imaging

Download or read book Inverse Methods in Electromagnetic Imaging written by Wolfgang-M. Boerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the use of polarization effects for radar and electromagnetic imaging problems (References 1, 2, and 3). The problem of electro magnetic imaging can be divided into the following areas: (1) Propagation of the Stokes' vector from the transmitter to the target region through various atmospheric conditions (rain, dust, fog, clouds, turbulence, etc.). (2) Scattering of the Stokes' vector from the object. (3) Scattering of the Stokes' vector from the rough surface, terrain, and the volume scattering. (4) Propagation of the Stokes' vector from the target region to the receiver. (5) The characteristics of the receiver relating the Stokes' vector to the output. The propagation characteristics of the Stokes' vector through various media can be described by the equation of transfer. Even though the scalar equation of transfer has been studied extensively in the past, the vector equation of transfer has not received as much attention. In recent years, however, a need for further study of the vector radiative transfer theory has become increasingly evident and several important studies have been reported. This paper presents a general formulation of the vector theory of radiative transfer under general anisotropic scattering conditions. Some useful solutions are also presented 4 8 for several practical situations. - 2.
