Book Comparison of Two Methods for the Combination of Satellite and Gravimetric Data

Download or read book Comparison of Two Methods for the Combination of Satellite and Gravimetric Data written by Richard H. Rapp and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One method for the combination of satellite and gravimetric data consists of a comparison of a potential coefficient found by satellite analysis with the coefficient found by the usual summation process applied to a global estimate of a terrestrial anomaly field. A second method compares an anomaly computed from a set of potential coefficients found from satellite analysis with the observed terrestrial estimate. The specific equations for the adjustment procedure are derived and compared. (Author).

Book A Method for the Combination of Satellite and Gravimetric Data

Download or read book A Method for the Combination of Satellite and Gravimetric Data written by Richard H. Rapp and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of 2261 5 degrees x 5 degrees mean anomalies was used alone and with satellite determined harmonic coefficients of the Smithsonian Institution to determine the geopotential to various degrees, the highest being n = 14. The results of these solutions were used to form a global 5 degrees x 5 degrees anomaly field referred to the International Gravity Formula. A by-product of this investigation was a value of equatorial gravity of 978.0463 gals in the Potsdam system or 978.0326 gals in an absolute system if -13.7 mgals is taken as the Potsdam correction. Combining this value of gamma sub E with f = 1/298.25, KM = 3.986088 X 10 to the 20th power cm cubed/sec squared, the consistent equatorial radius was found to be 6378141m. (Author).

Book Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics written by Harsh Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 1579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have witnessed the growth of the Earth Sciences in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the planet that we live on. This development addresses the challenging endeavor to enrich human lives with the bounties of Nature as well as to preserve the planet for the generations to come. Solid Earth Geophysics aspires to define and quantify the internal structure and processes of the Earth in terms of the principles of physics and forms the intrinsic framework, which other allied disciplines utilize for more specific investigations. The first edition of the Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics was published in 1989 by Van Nostrand Reinhold publishing company. More than two decades later, this new volume, edited by Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, represents a thoroughly revised and expanded reference work. It brings together more than 200 articles covering established and new concepts of Geophysics across the various sub-disciplines such as Gravity, Geodesy, Geomagnetism, Seismology, Seismics, Deep Earth Processes, Plate Tectonics, Thermal Domains, Computational Methods, etc. in a systematic and consistent format and standard. It is an authoritative and current reference source with extraordinary width of scope. It draws its unique strength from the expert contributions of editors and authors across the globe. It is designed to serve as a valuable and cherished source of information for current and future generations of professionals.

Book Numerical Results from the Combination of Gravimetric and Satellite Data Using the Principles of Least Squares Collocation

Download or read book Numerical Results from the Combination of Gravimetric and Satellite Data Using the Principles of Least Squares Collocation written by Richard H. Rapp and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report develops working equations for carrying out the combination of gravimetric and satellite data starting from the equations of Moritz, and using the principles of the usual least squares adjustment and the least squares collocation. Of the two methods of combining data considered, one could not be carried out because of the need to invert a 1654 x 1654 full matrix. Numerical tests were conducted through the estimation of ten sets of potential coefficients complete to degree 20 plus certain resonance coefficients which have been derived starting from the GEM 3 potential coefficients and a 5 degree equal area block anomaly field. The solutions differ in two ways: first, the weighting applied to the a priori known potential coefficients, and second whether the usual least squares or collocation adjustment scheme is used for the estimation of the potential coefficients. To determine a best overall set of potential coefficients, comparisons have been made with astro-geodetic undulations (4196 values in Australia and the United States); with 5 degree anomalies; with anomaly degree variances, and by use of the coefficient sets in orbit fitting and prediction. Such comparisons indicate that collocation derived potential coefficients yield better values than those found using the usual least squares approach. A recommended set of potential coefficients and a consistent 5 degree equal area block anomaly field are given. (Author).

Book Remote Sensing by Satellite Gravimetry

Download or read book Remote Sensing by Satellite Gravimetry written by Thomas Gruber and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, satellite gravimetry has become a new remote sensing technique that provides a detailed global picture of the physical structure of the Earth. With the CHAMP, GRACE, GOCE and GRACE Follow-On missions, mass distribution and mass transport in the Earth system can be systematically observed and monitored from space. A wide range of Earth science disciplines benefit from these data, enabling improvements in applied models, providing new insights into Earth system processes (e.g., monitoring the global water cycle, ice sheet and glacier melting or sea-level rise) or establishing new operational services. Long time series of mass transport data are needed to disentangle anthropogenic and natural sources of climate change impacts on the Earth system. In order to secure sustained observations on a long-term basis, space agencies and the Earth science community are currently planning future satellite gravimetry mission concepts to enable higher accuracy and better spatial and temporal resolution. This Special Issue provides examples of recent improvements in gravity observation techniques and data processing and analysis, applications in the fields of hydrology, glaciology and solid Earth based on satellite gravimetry data, as well as concepts of future satellite constellations for monitoring mass transport in the Earth system.

Book Gravity Geoid and Space Missions

Download or read book Gravity Geoid and Space Missions written by Christopher Jekeli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lAG International Symposium on Gravity, Geoid, and Space Missions 2004 (GGSM2004) was lield in the beautiful city of Porto, Portugal, from 30 August to 3 September 2004. This symposium encompassed the themes of Commission 2 (Gravity Field) of the newly structured lAG, as well as interdisciplinary topics related to geoid and gravity modeling, with special attention given to the current and planned gravi- dedicated satellite missions. The symposium also followed in the tradition of mid-term meetings that were held between the quadrennial joint meetings of the International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. The previous mid-term meetings were the International Symposia on Gravity, Geoid, and Marine Geodesy (Tokyo, 1996), and Gravity, Geoid, and Geodynamics (Banff, 2000). GGSM2004 aimed to bring together scientists from different areas in the geosciences, working with gravity and geoid related problems, both from the theoretical and practical points of view. Topics of interest included the integration of heterogeneous data and contributions from satellite and airborne techniques to the study of the spatial and temporal variations of the gravity field. In addition to the special focus on the CHAMP, GRACE, and GOCE satellite missions, attention was also directed toward projects addressing topographic and ice field mapping using SAR, LIDAR, and laser altimetry, as well as missions and studies related to planetary geodesy.
