Book Comparison of Treatment Need Complexity and Outcome of Class II Division I Malocclusion Between the United States and the United Kingdom

Download or read book Comparison of Treatment Need Complexity and Outcome of Class II Division I Malocclusion Between the United States and the United Kingdom written by Matthew Shue Te Yeh and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aim: To assess the orthodontic treatment outcome standards in the US and the UK. Subjects and method: The pre and post treatment casts were randomly selected from the University of Louisville and the University of Wales. Main outcome measured: An occlusal index was used to assess the treatment need, complexity and outcome of the cases. Statistical analyses: Kolmogorov-Smirnov two sample tests, the analysis yielded binomial proportions, an exact p value and odds ratio were used to explore outcomes measured. Results: There is a statistically significant difference between the two centers with regard to the distribution of the post treatment improvement (p = 0.0142); and the extraction rates (p = 5.671e005, OR = 4.6). Conclusion: An objective appraisal of the quality of orthodontic care provided in the both centers has been undertaken. The observed differences can be explained partly by the differences in the health care system and treatment philosophy.

The following three aspects are described in detail in this book: Growth of the Facial Skeleton - types of treatment which promote or guide growth. In order to control these natural processes artificially, a precise understanding of them is required. Aetiology of the Malocclusion - the various types of causative therapy and the elimination of the causes. Functional Analysis - many malocclusions are a result of dysfunctions. As a variety of methods are available for treating dysfunctions, functional analysis is taken very seriously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Helping patients achieve an optimal quality of life through patient-centered treatment planning should be the ultimate goal of all oral health care providers. However, this issue extends beyond the realm of the individual clinician's office. This text presents quality-of-life research from various fields, including psychology, public health, and general health care; discusses how a patient-centered approach can be applied to basic oral and craniofacial research, clinical dental practice, community dental health issues, and dental education; and addresses how oral health-related quality of life relates to treating and understanding different patient populations, such as children with special needs, medically compromised patients, patients with oral cancer, and patients with chronic facial pain. Also discussed is how factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age can affect oral health-related quality-of-life concerns and treatment strategies. Finally, the book offers an outlook on the role that oral health-related quality of life will play in future research and dental education.

Book excerpt: There's a silent epidemic in western civilization, and it is right under our noses. Our jaws are getting smaller and our teeth crooked and crowded, creating not only aesthetic challenges but also difficulties with breathing. Modern orthodontics has persuaded us that braces and oral devices can correct these problems. While teeth can certainly be straightened, what about the underlying causes of this rapid shift in oral evolution and the health risks posed by obstructed airways? Sandra Kahn and Paul R. Ehrlich, a pioneering orthodontist and a world-renowned evolutionist, respectively, present the biological, dietary, and cultural changes that have driven us toward this major health challenge. They propose simple adjustments that can alleviate this developing crisis, as well as a major alternative to orthodontics that promises more significant long-term relief. Jaws will change your life. Every parent should read this book.
