Book Statistics for Linguists

Download or read book Statistics for Linguists written by David Eddington and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguists with no background in statistics will find this book to be an accessible introduction to statistics. Concepts are explained in non-technical terms, and mathematical formulas are kept to a minimum. The book incorporates SPSS, which is a statistics package that incorporates a point and click interface rather than complex line-commands. Step-by-step instructions are provided for some of the most widely used statistics in linguistics. At the same time, the concepts behind each procedure are also explained. Traditional analyses such as ANOVA and t-tests are included in the book, but linguistic data is often not amenable to such analyses. For this reason, non-parametric and mixed-effects procedures are also introduced.

What are the most useful words to learn to understand the academic spoken language in mathematics, biology, and engineering lectures? Does writing words contribute to vocabulary learning? What should a test measuring the skill of guessing from context consist of? Should loan words be included in vocabulary tests? How should we evaluate vocabulary learning that occurs through watching captioned video? How has eye-tracking been used in vocabulary research? Together, the chapters in this volume highlight innovation in vocabulary studies and many directions for researching, testing, and learning words. Book Language Embodiment Principles Processes and Theories for Learning and Teaching Practices in Typical and Atypical Readers

Download or read book Language Embodiment Principles Processes and Theories for Learning and Teaching Practices in Typical and Atypical Readers written by Connie Qun Guan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional philosophy of language was originated based on a disembodied view. In contrast, recent research with behavioral and neuroimaging methodologies emphasizes language embodiment, which claims for the central role of the body and brain in shaping language acquisition, learning, comprehension, and production. The embodiment view of language is supported by a body of empirical research covering the principles and mechanism of body-mind integration from interdisciplinary perspectives, including cognitive linguistics, educational psychology, artificial intelligence, and physiological neuroscience.

Book Parental Questionnaires as a Reliable Instrument for the Assessment of Child Language Development

Download or read book Parental Questionnaires as a Reliable Instrument for the Assessment of Child Language Development written by Maria-José Ezeizabarrena and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language is crucial in child development. Therefore, general questions such as what are the possible challenges in language acquisition or such as how well the/my child is doing, are commonly present for researchers, clinicians, teachers, and parents. Parent-child interaction offers a privileged setting to observe children’s behavior in multiple communicative situations, which often is only available to the parents/caregivers. For this reason, within the broad range of methods used to assess children’s development, parental questionnaires are widely used being a non-invasive and inexpensive instrument to obtain information which is otherwise difficult to obtain. Data obtained with the many questionnaires covering various aspects of child development and communicative competence are equally relevant for basic research and everyday clinical practice. Development and use of parental questionnaires as well as data interpretation frequently require an interdisciplinary and cross-sector approach, bringing together developmental psychologists and practitioners. This interdisciplinarity is assumed but rarely addressed directly.
