Book Thermal Conductivity Seebeck Coefficient and Electrical Resistivity of Heavily Phosphorus doped Silicon from 313k to 673k

Download or read book Thermal Conductivity Seebeck Coefficient and Electrical Resistivity of Heavily Phosphorus doped Silicon from 313k to 673k written by Thomas H. T. Gaidry and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient of heavily phosphorus-doped silicon were measured between 313K and 673K. The cylindrical single-crystal sample had a nominal impurity concentration of 5x10 to the 19th power donors per cu cm. The series comparison method with Armco iron as a standard was used for measuring the thermal conductivity. The relative random error of the thermal conductivity measurements was determined to be 6%. The measured values for the thermal conductivity of the heavily doped sample ranged from 0.562 W/cm K at 373K to 0.265 W/cm K at 673K. The electrical resistivity varied directly with temperature, thus indicating that the lattice scattering of the electrons was dominant in the degenerate semiconductor. The values obtained for the Seebeck coefficient passed through a minimum of -260 mu V/K at approximately 600K. The lattice thermal conductivity was computed from Holland's theory of thermal conductivity. A disorder parameter Gamma of 0.0055, which was 18 times larger than the associated theoretical value for Gamma, was needed to reach agreement between theory and experiment. An electron-phonon interaction term, which was inserted into Holland's analysis, was found to have negligible effect except near 300K where it reduced the calculated thermal conductivity by 35 mW/cm K. Book excerpt: The thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient of high-purity iron, two iron--chromium alloys, one iron--nickel alloy, and one iron--chromium--nickel alloy were measured over the temperature range from 90 K to 400 K. Smoothed values for the thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity were used to calculate the electronic thermal conductivity, the lattice conductivity, and the Lorenz function by means of a binary alloy separation technique. The lattice conductivity and Lorenz function exhibited little change due to the addition of chromium; however, the addition of small amounts of nickel resulted in significant property changes. The lattice conductivity at high temperatures was calculated from theory and compared to experimental results. Good agreement between theory and experimental data was obtained. 17 figures, 29 tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been almost thirty years since the publication of a book that is entirely dedicated to the theory, description, characterization and measurement of the thermal conductivity of solids. The recent discovery of new materials which possess more complex crystal structures and thus more complicated phonon scattering mechanisms have brought innovative challenges to the theory and experimental understanding of these new materials. With the development of new and novel solid materials and new measurement techniques, this book will serve as a current and extensive resource to the next generation researchers in the field of thermal conductivity. This book is a valuable resource for research groups and special topics courses (8-10 students), for 1st or 2nd year graduate level courses in Thermal Properties of Solids, special topics courses in Thermal Conductivity, Superconductors and Magnetic Materials, and to researchers in Thermoelectrics, Thermal Barrier Materials and Solid State Physics.

Book excerpt: It was seven years ago this month when I had the pleasure of writing the Foreword to the Proceedings of the Eighth Conference on Thermal Conductivity hosted by TPRC/ Purdue University in 1968. Since then this Conference has developed to the point where one can say it has just entered a new phase. At its meeting in June 1975, the Board of Governors of the International Thermal Conductivity Conferences passed a resolution which formalizes two main policies that were felt to be desirable for a number of years, A key item of the resolution was for CINDAS/Purdue University to become the permanent Sponsor of the Conferences and in this capacity assist the Conferences in all matters which will result in the effective implementation of its goals and mission. In short, CINDAS will serve as a home base for the Conferences thus providing continuity and a permanent point of contact. CINDAS/Purdue University is pleased to accept this respons ibility as it is well within its mission to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge on thermophysica! properties of matter. A second important aspect of the Conference resolution was the establishment of a policy to publish the Proceedings of future conferences on a continuing and uniform basis effective with this, the Fourteenth Conference.
