Book excerpt: Preliminary data are presented based on 45 percent of the sample, from a simultaneous study of .pi./sup -/p .-->. eta'n, eta' .-->. eta.pi./sup +/.pi./sup -/, eta .-->. .gamma gamma., (1770 events) and .pi./sup -/p .-->. etan.pi./sup 0/.pi./sup +/.pi./sup -/ .-->. .gamma gamma., (3250 events) at 8.4 GeV/c, covering a range of momentum transfer t' from 0 to 1.7 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. Both charged pions and both .gamma.'s from each reaction were measured in the charged and neutral spectrometer at the Argonne ZGS. Backgrounds are 2 to 5 percent. The shapes of dsigma/dt for the two reactions are found significantly different, the eta' having considerably less forward turnover. The ratio of dsigma/dt at t' = 0 is (within present understanding of the systematics) consistent with a simple quark model and quadratic mixing angle approximately -10/sup 0.

Book excerpt: The ratio R of the differential cross sections for .pi.−p eta'n and .pi.−p eta n was measured with high statistics and small systematic errors at 8.45 GeV/c. R is generally interpreted as the relative content of nonstrange, ground-state quarks in eta' and eta. It is found that R decreases with increasing t; however, extrapolation to t = 0 gives R(0) = 0.672 +- 0.032 (statistical) +- 0.047 (systematic) for the dominant spin flip cross sections, and R(0) = 0.500 +- 0.085 +- 0.035 for the spin nonflip, in excellent agreement with results at higher energy.

The zero-degree charge exchange cross sections determined from these measurements are shown to be consistent with the measured $pi$$sup +$p and $pi$$sup -$p total cross section differences. An inelastic cross section of 21.1 +- 0.6 mb was obtained. Topological cross sections and multiplicity moments are presented and compared with results at lower energies. The energy dependence of the mean charged multiplicity, (n), and the second moment, f$sub 2$, are well fit by a polynomial in log's for $pi$$sup -$p experiment from 10 to 250 GeV/c. (auth).

Book excerpt: Events of the form .pi./sup -/p .-->. n.pi./sup +/.pi./sup -/ where the neutron is produced fast and forward in the laboratory are reported. The data were obtained in an initial exposure of 160,000 pictures in the University of Illinois--Argonne National Laboratory streamer chamber using an 8 GeV/c pion beam. The chamber was triggered by the detection of a fast forward neutral hadron interacting in an array of thick plate optical spark chambers. The dominant feature of the data is quasi-two body-production of nrho/sup 0/ and nf/sup 0/ intermediate states. The differential cross section for rho/sup 0/ production shows evidence for backward peaking near u' = 0. The f/sup 0/ decay angular distributions appear to be consistent with the hypothesis of u channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. For both nrho/sup 0/ and nf/sup 0/ production the observed cross sections are on the order of one microbarn. (auth).
