Book Comparison of Three jet and Radiative Two jet Events in Electron positron Annihilation at 29 GeV

This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By comparing 3-jet (ee− .-->. q anti q g) and radiative 2-jet (ee− .-->. q anti q .gamma.) events from electron-positron annihilation, we have studied the local and global effects of the presence of a hard bremsstrahlung gluon in hadronic events. Detector and event selection efficiencies and biases affect these two kinds of events almost equally because they have very similar kinematics and topologies. Accurate comparisons of q anti q g and q anti q .gamma. events can therefore be made. Globally, we observe a depletion of hadrons in q anti q g events relative to q anti q .gamma. events on the opposite side of the event plane from the gluon, in the angular region between the q and anti q jets. This depletion is shown to be in agreement with the predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The existence of this effect demonstrates that the presence of a gluon significantly alters the color forces and hence the fragmentation process in hadronic events. We also use these q anti q .gamma. and q anti q g events to compare low energy (4.5 GeV) gluon and quark jets. Our data indicate that gluon jets have softer x/sub p/ distributions than quark jets, while the transverse momentum distributions of these two types of jets are identical within our errors. Although we are unable to determine if the multiplicities of gluon (n/sub /) and quark (n/sub q/) jets are different, the ratio n/sub g//n/sub q/ = 9/4 predicted asymptotically in QCD would not be consistent with our data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have studied differences between quark and gluon jets using 3-jet events in hadronic decays of Z° bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Gluon jets were identified in symmetric 3-jet events containing one jet tagged as a heavy quark jet and compared with a mixed sample of quark and gluon jets and also with a mixed sample of light quark (u, d and s) and gluon jets. Their preliminary results show that the particle multiplicity in gluon jets is higher than that in light quark jets. These results are in qualitative agreement with QCD expectations. Differences are also observed in particle energy spectra and the jet widths, consistent with QCD expectations.

Book excerpt: The energy dependence of the relative production rate of 3-jet events is studied in hadronic ee− annihilation events at centre of mass energies between 22 and 56 GeV, using the data of the JADE, MARK-II and AMY collaborations at PETRA, PEP and TRISTAN. Three jet events are defined by a jet finding algorithm which is closely related to the definition of resolvable jets used in O(.cap alpha./sub s/2) perturbative QCD calculations, where the relative production rate of 3-jet events is roughly proportional to the strong coupling strength, .cap alpha./sub s/. The observed production rates of 3-jet events decreases significantly with increasing centre of mass energy. The results, which are independent of fragmentation model calculations, can be directly compared to theoretically calculated jet production rates and are in good agreement with the QCD expectations of a running coupling strength, while the hypothesis of an energy independent coupling constant can be excluded with a significance of 5 standard deviations. Based on these results, the presented jet analysis also provides the possibility to detect first signs of the production of new and heavy particles in the early stage of data taking at SLC and LEP.

Book Quark and Gluon Jets at CDF

Download or read book Quark and Gluon Jets at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jet shapes at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV have been measured by CDF at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The jet shape is mainly formed by parton emission before hadronization. The jet shapes may also be used to differ between quark and gluon jets. Two approaches are tried. Jet shape variables are input to a feed forward neural network trained on QCD Monte Carlos. We observe a variation of the quark content of jets as a function of jet transverse energy. The second approach consists of constructing a likelihood function, based on Monte Carlo predictions, with the Mellin moments of the momentum of charged tracks in jets. Differences are found between gluon-like jets in 2-jet events and quark-like jets in photon-jet events.
