Book Predicting Volumes and Numbers of Logs by Grade from Hardwood Cruise Data

Download or read book Predicting Volumes and Numbers of Logs by Grade from Hardwood Cruise Data written by Daniel A. Yaussy and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The equations presented allow the estimation of quality and quantity of commercial logs produced from a hardwood stand based on cruise data. The gross International inch board-foot volume and number of logs by log grade for trees of 11 species can be predicted based on dbh, merchantable height, and tree grade. A two-stage estimation procedure was developed utilizing regression techniques and linear discriminant analysis. The volumes by log grade are estimated with multivariate multiple linear regression equations. These volumes, the tree dimensions, and grade are then used in discriminant functions to estimate the number of logs by log grade. This information, when packaged in appropriate computer software, will provide the mill manager with the means to estimate the quantity and quality of logs that would be added to a mill yard inventory from a timber sale. The software also will help a timber buyer or landowner set purchase price based on stumpage prices or delivered log prices and conversion costs.S3.

Book Comparison of Different Approaches to Estimate Bark Volume of Industrial Wood at Disc and Log Scale

Download or read book Comparison of Different Approaches to Estimate Bark Volume of Industrial Wood at Disc and Log Scale written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Within the wood supply chain, the measurement of roundwood plays a key role due to its high economic impact. While wood industry mainly processes the solid wood, the bark mostly remains as an industrial by-product. In Central Europe, it is common that the wood is sold over bark but that the price is calculated on a timber volume under bark. However, logs are often measured as stacks and, thus, the volume includes not only the solid wood content but also the bark portion. Mostly, the deduction factors used to estimate the solid wood content are based on bark thickness. The aim of this study was to compare the estimation of bark volume from scaling formulae with the real bark volume, obtained by xylometric technique. Moreover, the measurements were performed using logs under practice conditions and using discs under laboratory conditions. The mean bark volume was 6.9 dm3 and 26.4 cm3 for the Norway spruce logs and the Scots pine discs respectively. Whereas the results showed good performances regarding the root mean square error, the coefficient of determination (R2) and the mean absolute error for the volume estimation of the total volume of discs and logs (over bark), the performances were much lower for the bark volume estimations only

Book Lumber Yields by the New Timber Cruising Log Grades for Old Growth Coast Douglas Fir Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lumber Yields by the New Timber Cruising Log Grades for Old Growth Coast Douglas Fir Classic Reprint written by Marlin E. Plank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Yields by the New Timber Cruising Log Grades for Old-Growth Coast Douglas-Fir Logs were bucked for sawing according to practices normally followed at each study mill. The logs were scaled after they were bucked for sawing, normally as they entered the sawmill, by Bureau of Land Management These scaling rules follow National Forest Log Scaling Handbook rules, except for scale deduction procedures. Volumes are in Scribner Decimal C scale. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
