Book Comparison of Incompressible Flow and Isothermal Compressible Flow Formulae

Download or read book Comparison of Incompressible Flow and Isothermal Compressible Flow Formulae written by J. Hord and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass flow formulae for incompressible and 'modified-incompressible' flow are compared with the isothermal comprssible flow relation under the following conditions:The gas flow is steady, isothermal, and fullydeveloped in a horizontal pipe of constant cross section with a prescribed static pressure drop (P1-P2).The comparative data are limited to static pressure ratios (P2/P1) > 1/2, and subsonic isothermal flow.Laminar and turbulent flows are treated.Under the limitations of the comparison, modified-incompressible flow and isothermal gas flow relations are identical when fL/2D is much greater than ln(P1/P2).Graphical plots indicate the degree of approximation or error involved in using incompressible relations to solve compressible flow problems.Pressure losses due to end effects are briefly discussed.(Author).

Book On the Flow of a Compressible Fluid by the Hodograph Method

Download or read book On the Flow of a Compressible Fluid by the Hodograph Method written by I. E. Garrick and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Elementary basic solutions of the equations of motion of a compressible fluid in the hodograph variables are developed and used to provide a basis for comparison, in the form of velocity correction formulas, of corresponding compressible and incompressible flows. The known approximate results of Chaplygin, von Kármán and Tsien, Temple and Yarwood, and Prandtl and Glauert are unified by means of the analysis of the present paper. Two new types of approximations, obtained from basic solutions, are introduced; they possess certain desirable features of the other approximations and appear preferable as a basis for extrapolation into the range of high stream Mach numbers and large disturbances to the main stream. Tables and figures giving velocity and pressure-coefficient correction factors are included in order to facilitate the practical application of the results.

Book Incompressible Flow and the Finite Element Method Volume 2

Download or read book Incompressible Flow and the Finite Element Method Volume 2 written by P. M. Gresho and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2000-06-22 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive two-volume reference covers the application of the finite element method to incompressible flows in fluid mechanics, addressing the theoretical background and the development of appropriate numerical methods applied to their solution. Volume One provides extensive coverage of the prototypical fluid mechanics equation: the advection-diffusion equation. For both this equation and the equations of principal interest - the Navier-Stokes equations (covered in detail in Volume Two) - a discussion of both the continuous and discrete equations is presented, as well as explanations of how to properly march the time-dependent equations using smart implicit methods. Boundary and initial conditions, so important in applications, are carefully described and discussed, including well-posedness. The important role played by the pressure, so confusing in the past, is carefully explained. The book explains and emphasizes consistency in six areas: * consistent mass matrix * consistent pressure Poisson equation * consistent penalty methods * consistent normal direction * consistent heat flux * consistent forces Fully indexed and referenced, this book is an essential reference tool for all researchers, students and applied scientists in incompressible fluid mechanics.

Book Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow

Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow written by Richard Von Mises and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Theory of Compressible Fluid Flow covers the conceptual and mathematical aspects of theory of compressible fluid flow. This five-chapter book specifically tackles the role of thermodynamics in the mechanics of compressible fluids. This text begins with a discussion on the general theory of characteristics of compressible fluid with its application. This topic is followed by a presentation of equations delineating the role of thermodynamics in compressible fluid mechanics. The discussion then shifts to the theory of shocks as asymptotic phenomena, which is set within the context of rational mechanics. The remaining two chapters is a thorough description of the hodograph method. These chapters provide a comparison of the modern integration theories. The features, characteristics, and application of transonic flow are also explored. This book is an ideal advanced textbook for both graduate students and research workers.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference work covers all the important details regarding the application of the finite element method to incompressible flows. It addresses the theoretical background and the detailed development of appropriate numerical methods applied to the solution of a wide range of incompressible flows, beginning with extensive coverage of the advection-diffusion equation in volume one. For both this equation and the equations of principal interest - the Navier-Stokes equations, covered in detail in volume two - detailed discussion of both the continuous and discrete equations is presented, as well as explanations of how to properly march the time-dependent equations using smart implicit methods. Boundary and initial conditions, so important in applications, are carefully described and discussed, including well-posedness. The important role played by the pressure, so confusing in the past, is carefully explained. Together, this two volume work explains and emphasizes consistency in six areas: · consistent mass matrix · consistent pressure Poisson equation · consistent penalty methods · consistent normal direction · consistent heat flux · consistent forces Fully indexed and referenced, this book is an essential reference tool for all researchers, students and applied scientists in incompressible fluid mechanics.
