Book Comparison of Field Vane and Laboratory Undrained Shear Strength in Soft Sensitive Clays

Download or read book Comparison of Field Vane and Laboratory Undrained Shear Strength in Soft Sensitive Clays written by CC. Ladd and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the paper is to compare, at two different sites, the field vane strength with the undrained shear strength measured in laboratory on intact clay specimens cut from block samples. The laboratory tests included triaxial compression, triaxial extension, and direct simple shear tests on specimens anisotropically reconsolidated to the in-situ stresses. The laboratory undrained shear strength was determined on averaged stress strain curves built from the three types of laboratory tests in order to account for strain compatibility. At both sites, the undrained shear strengths obtained by the field vane and by the laboratory tests are nearly identical. The comparison is discussed in terms of field vane correction.

Book Vane Shear Behavior of Soft Bangkok Clay

Download or read book Vane Shear Behavior of Soft Bangkok Clay written by TH. Seah and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field vane shear test is one of the most common in situ tests to obtain the undrained shear strength of soft clay. Uncoupling of the torque generated by the soil resistance along the vertical and horizontal planes of the vane has been done by conducting conventional direct shear test and newly developed vertical direct shear test on the soil. From the shear stress-displacement relationship of the direct shear tests, simple analysis is performed to simulate the field vane behavior at various depths. The results of the simulation agree well with those obtained from the field vane tests on soft Bangkok clay. The conventional method of computing the undrained shear strength of the field vane shear based on the maximum torque is close to the equivalent average value from the shear box tests. A special laboratory triaxial vane apparatus was also used to study the shearing behavior of the soft clay with the capability of Ko-consolidating the sample before conducting the vane shear test. The results of the triaxial vane tests were also compared with the predictions. The predicted torque values are lower than the experimental data for the same angle of rotation.

Book Factors Affecting the Measurements and Interpretation of the Vane Strength in Soft Sensitive Clays

Download or read book Factors Affecting the Measurements and Interpretation of the Vane Strength in Soft Sensitive Clays written by A. Leblanc and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vane tests have been carried out in the field and in the laboratory to investigate some factors affecting the measurements and interpretation of the test, specially the disturbance caused by the insertion of the vane into the clay and the time and shear velocity effects on the strength. Strength rotation curves and failure diagrams have been investigated in the laboratory. The results have shown that the insertion of the vane produces disturbance and generates pore pressure so that the vane strength measured is reduced while time effect leads to an increase in shear strength. Study of the failure diagram shows that the actual shear surface is larger than the cylindrical surface defined by the diameter of the blades.

Book Comparison of In Situ Vane Cone Penetrometer and Laboratory Test Results for Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Clays

Download or read book Comparison of In Situ Vane Cone Penetrometer and Laboratory Test Results for Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Clays written by RJ. Ebelhar and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site investigations were recently performed offshore at three prospective plat-form sites in water depths between 400 and 500 m in the Gulf of Mexico. Soil conditions at the sites generally range from very soft clays near the seafloor to very stiff clays at 120- to 150-m penetration. Analyses of stress history indicate the soils at these locations are generally normally consolidated. Laboratory tests were performed on recovered specimens to deter-mine the undrained shear strength. Standard laboratory miniature vane shear tests and unconsolidated-undrained triaxial tests were performed in addition to consolidated-undrained tests using stress history and normalized soil engineering properties (SHANSEP) procedures. Tests performed in the field included in-situ vane and cone penetrometer. Cone factors Nk were computed using in-situ vane shear strengths as the reference strength.

Book On the Sensitivity of Soft Clay Obtained by the Field Vane Test

Download or read book On the Sensitivity of Soft Clay Obtained by the Field Vane Test written by Yan-Bin Gao and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field vane test (FVT) is used more widely today in traditional site investigations to investigate the sensitivity of soft clay and even likely to replace the unconfined compression test (UCT). In this paper, the strengths and sensitivities of Shanghai soft clays obtained by an FVT and a UCT from a traditional site investigation and that obtained by the laboratory vane test (LVT) and the UCT on block samples were compared in detail. It was found that the FVT obtains higher strengths but lower sensitivity. This phenomenon was also observed in other soft clays. The unreliability of sensitivity determination by the FVT seems to increase with the liquid index and sensitivity of soil. The vane remolding method used in the FVT was found to be the major factor that causes these problems and cannot remold soil completely using the recommended number of vane rotations.

Book Reliability and Statistics in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Reliability and Statistics in Geotechnical Engineering written by Gregory B. Baecher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk and reliability analysis is an area of growing importance in geotechnical engineering, where many variables have to be considered. Statistics, reliability modeling and engineering judgement are employed together to develop risk and decision analyses for civil engineering systems. The resulting engineering models are used to make probabilistic predictions, which are applied to geotechnical problems. Reliability & Statistics in Geotechnical Engineering comprehensively covers the subject of risk and reliability in both practical and research terms * Includes extensive use of case studies * Presents topics not covered elsewhere--spatial variability and stochastic properties of geological materials * No comparable texts available Practicing engineers will find this an essential resource as will graduates in geotechnical engineering programmes.
