Book Building Transfer Student Pathways for College and Career Success

Download or read book Building Transfer Student Pathways for College and Career Success written by Sonya Joseph and published by The National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in partnership with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students. Analysis of bachelor’s degree completion suggests that only about a third of college graduates attend a single institution from start to finish. More than one quarter earn college credits from three or more schools before completing a degree. For most, these student-defined pathways lead to increased time-to-degree and higher costs. Many will simply drop out long before crossing the finish line. Ensuring college completion and success requires an understanding of the evolving nature of transfer transitions and a system-wide approach that reaches beyond two-year and four-year institutions to include high schools participating in dual enrollment programs and military college initiatives. A new edited collection offers insight into institutional and statewide partnerships that create clearly defined pathways to college graduation and career success for all students.

Book The Self concept of Students in Remediation in a Rural Community College in Mississippi

Download or read book The Self concept of Students in Remediation in a Rural Community College in Mississippi written by Corky Fitzgerald Wicks and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the aims of this study was to look at the difference in self-concept between traditional and non-traditional community college students. This study also examined self-concept differences based on ethnicity and gender and focused specifically on community college students in one or more developmental courses. Students from developmental math, reading, and English classes were given the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: Second Edition survey (see Appendix B for a list of the questions on the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: Second Edition). Students were asked to complete the long form consisting of 82 questions using Likert Scale responses from 1-Always False to 5-Always True. The results showed that among the 135 developmental students participating in this study, the total self-concept score did not differ statistically between traditional and non-traditional students. This study did, however, show that the mean value score for Black students was statistically significant and higher when compared to White students. All other ethnic groups were statistically equal. There was also no statistical difference in self-concept score based on gender. The overall self-concept score mean value fell in the 29th percentile for the students in the survey. This was well below the desired 50th percentile range between 296 and 299 as the cutoff point for high self-concept as referenced in the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale: Second Edition Profile chart for the Adult Form. Based on the results of this study, the self-concept score was proven to be a bi-product of student background and academic success. Self-concept can be a valuable pre-test and post-test tool for measuring the impact of developmental programs. Academic success raises self-concept, and given the statistical significance of the difference between the scores of Black developmental students and White developmental students, more research is warranted. The results from this study of developmental students provide additional support for the use of a self-concept score as a pre-test and post-test metric. Other than the pass or fail grade that a student may receive, the self-concept score can be used as a reliable way of measuring the impact of programs designed to improve retention and graduation rates of community college students.

Book The Relation of Self Variables to Transfer Student Success as Measured by Academic Psychological and Career Functioning

Download or read book The Relation of Self Variables to Transfer Student Success as Measured by Academic Psychological and Career Functioning written by Thomson Joseph Ling and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has suggested that transfer students experience difficulty in many domains however limited research has examined the variables associated with transfer student success. The present study examined transfer student success using a sample of 163 first-year transfer students at a large mid-Atlantic university. The mean age of the participants was 20 years, ranging in age from 18 to 33 years old. More than half of the participants were women, approximately half of the participants identified as White, one fifth of the participants identified as African American, one fifth as Asian, approximately 4% as Hispanic, and the rest as International or Other. Half of the participants indicated they transferred from a two-year institution and half indicated they transferred from a four-year institution. Independent variables examined were academic self-efficacy, career self-efficacy, and sense of belonging/social integration. Transfer student success was assessed through academic performance, psychological functioning, and career functioning. All variables except academic performance were assessed using survey data. Academic performance variables were assessed from student records. Using canonical correlation, two patterns of associations were found to explain transfer student functioning in a new institution. The two canonical variates suggested that patterns of transfer student experiences could be categorized in career development terms. The achievement pattern differed from moratorium in that the pattern of experiences was associated with feeling connected to faculty and valuing their friendships in college. On the other hand, the moratorium pattern differed from the achievement pattern in that peer and faculty interactions were not as important and the pattern of experiences suggested need for information about career options and themselves. Moreover, the pattern related to moratorium showed no association with confidence in career decision-making tasks. This study is one of the first to examine the transfer student experience in-depth independent of native students. While this study begins to address the complex story of success in transfer students, additional research is still needed. Replication should occur at colleges and universities of different sizes and in different locations. These findings, if replicated, suggest that counselors should provide differing interventions with transfer students to influence different pattern of experiences. Appended are: (1) Description of What Will Be Covered in the Introduction; (2) Demographic Form; (3) Institutional Integration Scale (IIS); (4) Self-Efficacy for Broad Academic Milestones Scale (SE-Broad); (5) Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale--Short Form (CDSES); (6) College Self-Efficacy Instrument (CSEI); (7) Occupation Identity Scale of the Extended Version of the Objective Measures of Ego Identity Status (EOM-EIS); (8) Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D); (9) Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE); (10) Commitment to Career Choices Scale (CCCS); (11) Participant Raffle Form; (12) Debriefing Form; (13) Informed Consent Form; and (14) Notification of Gift Certificate.
