Book Comparison of Chute and Stilling Basin Performance for Three Different Drop Box Inlets

Download or read book Comparison of Chute and Stilling Basin Performance for Three Different Drop Box Inlets written by William Oscar Ree and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three different drop (entrance box) inlets were tested and compared to determine their influence on the performance of a chute spillway and a Saint Anthony Falls stilling basin at the outlet of the chute. The tests were undertaken to determine if the entrance needed to be a deep box or if a shallow one would do as well.

Book Hydraulics of Stepped Chutes and Spillways

Download or read book Hydraulics of Stepped Chutes and Spillways written by Hubert Chanson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepped channel design has been in use for more than 3,500 years. Recent advances in technology have triggered a regained interest in stepped design, although much expertise has been lost in the last 80 years. The steps significantly increase the rate of energy dissipation taking place along the chute and reduce the size of the required downstream energy dissipation basin. Stepped cascades are also used in water treatment plants to enhance the air-water transfer of atmospheric gases (e.g. oxygen, nitrogen) and of volatile organic components (VOC). Results from more than forty-five laboratory studies and four prototype investigations were re-analysed and compared. The book provides a new understanding of stepped channel hydraulics, and is aimed both at researchers and professionals.

Book Flow Transition Design in Hydraulic Structures

Download or read book Flow Transition Design in Hydraulic Structures written by S.K. Mazumder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transitions are provided in hydraulic structures for economy and efficiency. This book covers all types of flow transitions: sub-critical to sub-critical, sub-critical to super critical, super-critical to sub-critical with hydraulic jump, and super-critical to super-critical transitions. It begins with an introduction followed by characteristics of flow in different types of transitions and procedures for hydraulic design of transitions in different structures. Different types of appurtenances used to control flow separation and ensure uniform flow at exit of transition and diffusers are included. Examples of hydraulic design of a few typical hydraulic structures are given as well.

Book An Asset Management Approach for Drainage Infrastructure and Culverts

Download or read book An Asset Management Approach for Drainage Infrastructure and Culverts written by Mohammad Najafi and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drainage infrastructure systems (culvert, storm sewer, outfall and related drainage elements) are mostly buried underground and are in need of special attention in terms of proactive/preventive asset management strategy. Drainage infrastructure systems represent an integral portion of roadway assets that routinely require inspection, maintenance, repair and renewal. Further challenges are the wide geospatial distribution of these infrastructure assets and environmental exposure. There has been considerable research conducted on culverts, but mostly looked at the problem from a traditional structural/geotechnical perspective. Asset management procedures for culverts and drainage infrastructure systems are complex issues, and can benefit a great deal from an optimal asset management program that draws from programs pertaining to buried pipes. The first and most important step in an asset management initiative is the establishment of mechanism for asset inventory and asset conditions in a format compatible with the routine procedures of field operators and inspectors. The first objective of this research project was to develop field protocols and operational business rules for inventory data collection and management and inspection of drainage infrastructures in terms of types of data to be collected, frequency of inspection, and analysis and reporting mechanisms. After review of these protocols by the project oversight committee, a pilot study was conducted to verify efficiency of their implementation. The condition assessment protocol introduced is useful in evaluating the overall condition of culverts and can be used for decision making regarding the repair, renewal or replacement of culverts. For the second objective of this project, investigators examined the inventory and inspection protocols employed by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and developed a decision support platform, which establishes a link between the inspection results and appropriate repair, renewal and replacement procedures. After applying the recommended procedures, the transportation agencies can better track the conditions of culverts thereby reducing the risks of culvert failures.

Book Hydraulic Design of Stepped Cascades Channels Weirs and Spillways

Download or read book Hydraulic Design of Stepped Cascades Channels Weirs and Spillways written by Hubert Chanson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepped channels and spillways have been used for more than 2,500 years but recently new construction materials have renewed interest in stepped chutes. The steps significantly increase the rate of energy dissipation taking place on the spillway face and reduce the size of the required downstream energy dissipation basin. Stepped cascades are also used in water treatment plants to enhance the air-water transfer of atmospheric gases and of volatile organic components. This book presents new material on the hydraulic characteristics of stepped chute flows. Two different flow regimes can occur: nappe flow regime for small discharges and flat channel slopes; and skimming flow regime - the hydraulics of each flow regime are described. The book also covers the effects of flow aeration and air bubble entrainment as well as the process of air-water gas transfer taking place above the stepped chute. Practical examples of hydraulic design and a critical review of the risks of accidents and failures with stepped channels makes this book an essential reference tool for professional engineers, postgraduates and researchers in the field.

Download or read book Wastewater Hydraulics written by Willi H. Hager and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second, enlarged edition of this established reference integrates many new insights into wastewater hydraulics. This work serves as a reference for researchers but also is a basis for practicing engineers. It can be used as a text book for graduate students, although it has the characteristics of a reference book. It addresses mainly the sewer hydraulician but also general hydraulic engineers who have to tackle many a problem in daily life, and who will not always find an appropriate solution. Each chapter is introduced with a summary to outline the contents. To illustrate application of the theory, examples are presented to explain the computational procedures. Further, to relate present knowledge to the history of hydraulics, some key dates on noteworthy hydraulicians are quoted. A historical note on the development of wastewater hydraulics is also added. References are given at the end of each chapter, and they are often helpful starting points for further reading. Each notation is defined when introduced, and listed alphabetically at the end of each chapter. This new edition includes in particular sideweirs with throttling pipes, drop shafts with an account on the two-phase flow features, as well as conduit choking due to direct or undular hydraulic jumps.
