Book Energy Water Nexus

Download or read book Energy Water Nexus written by Anu K. Mittal and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000, thermoelectric power plants accounted for 39 percent of total U.S. freshwater withdrawals. Traditionally, power plants have withdrawn water from rivers and other water sources to cool the steam used to produce electricity, so that it may be reused to produce more electricity. Some of this water is consumed, and some is discharged back to a water source. In the context of growing demands for both water and electricity, this report discusses: (1) approaches to reduce freshwater use by power plants and their drawbacks; (2) states' consideration of water use when reviewing proposals to build power plants; and (3) the usefulness of federal water data to experts and state regulators. Includes recommendations. Charts and tables.

Book Comparison of Advanced Cooling Technologies Efficiency Depending on Outside Temperature

Download or read book Comparison of Advanced Cooling Technologies Efficiency Depending on Outside Temperature written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some areas, water availability is a serious problem during the summer and could disrupt the normal operation of thermal power plants which needs large amount of water to operate. Moreover, when water quantities are sufficient, there can still be problem created by the waste heat rejected into the water which is regulated in order to limit the impact of thermal pollution on the environment. All these factors can lead to a decrease of electricity production during the summer and during peak hours, when electricity is the most needed. In order to deal with these problems, advanced cooling technologies have been developed and implemented to reduce water consumption and withdrawals but with an effect in the plant efficiency. This report aims at analyzing the efficiency of several cooling technologies with a fixed power plant design and so to produce a reference to be able to compare them.

Book Power Grid Resiliency for Adverse Conditions

Download or read book Power Grid Resiliency for Adverse Conditions written by Nicholas Abi-Samra and published by Artech House. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading expert in the field, this practical book offers a comprehensive understanding of the impact of extreme weather and the possible effects of climate change on the power grid. The impact and restoration of floods, winter storms, wind storms, and hurricanes as well as the effects of heat waves and dry spells on thermal power plants is explained in detail. This book explores proven practices for successful restoration of the power grid, increased system resiliency, and ride-through after extreme weather and provides readers with examples from super storm Sandy. This book presents the effects of lack of ground moisture on transmission line performance and gives an overview of line insulation coordination, stress-strength analysis, and tower insulation strength, and then provides readers with tangible solutions. Structural hardening of power systems against storms, including wind pressure, wood poles, and vegetation management is covered. Moreover, this book provides suggestions for practical implementations to improve future smart grid resiliency.

Book Energy s Water Demand Trends Vulnerabilities and Management

Download or read book Energy s Water Demand Trends Vulnerabilities and Management written by Nicole T. Carter and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's energy choices embody many tradeoffs. Water use is one of those tradeoffs. The energy choices before Congress represent vastly different demands on domestic freshwater. The energy sector's water consumption is projected to rise 50% from 2005 to 2030. This rising water demand derives from both an increase in the amount of energy demanded and shifts to more water-intense energy sources and technologies. This report discusses this issue as well as related issues that may arise for the 112th Congress.
