Book Comparison of Acoustic and Non Acoustic Methods of Vertical Line Array Element Localization

Download or read book Comparison of Acoustic and Non Acoustic Methods of Vertical Line Array Element Localization written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SWellEx-3 (Shallow Water evaluation cell Experiment 3) was conducted in July 1994 west of Point Loma in 200-m water. During the experiment, a MPL 64-element, 120-m aperture vertical array was deployed on the ocean bottom from the RIP FLIP. Located 2 m above the shallowest array element was a self-recording package equipped with depth, tilt, and direction-of-tilt sensors, thereby permitting array element localization (AEL) to be performed nonacoustically. In addition, AEL was performed acoustically using two different approaches. The first approach made use of transponder pings (in the vicinity of 12 kHz) received by high-frequency hydrophones spaced every 7.5 m along the vertical array. The second approach was based on a self-cohering technique where matched-field processing was performed on a low-frequency, multitone (50-200 Hz) sound source being towed at various ranges and azimuths from the array. The focus of this paper is on a comparison of the time-evolving array shape estimates generated by these three different methods. As shown, all three provide a consistent picture of array motion throughout the 6 hour period analyzed.

Book Experimental Acoustic Inversion Methods for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment

Download or read book Experimental Acoustic Inversion Methods for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment written by Andrea Caiti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, research on acoustic remote sensing of the ocean has evolved considerably, especially in studying complex physical and biological processes in shallow water environments. To review the state of the art, an international workshop was held at Carvoeiro, Portugal, in March 1999, bringing together leading international researchers in the field. In contrast to much of the recent theoretical work, emphasis was placed on the experimental validation of the techniques. This volume, based on presentations at this workshop, summarizes a range of diverse and innovative applications. The invited contributions explore the use of acoustics to measure bottom properties and morphology, as well as to probe buried objects within the sediment. Within the water column, sound is applied to imaging of oceanographic features such as currents and tides or monitoring of marine life. Another key theme is the use of sound to solve geometric inverse problems for precise tracking of undersea vehicles. Audience: This volume should be useful both to the novice seeking an introduction to the field and to advanced researchers interested in the latest developments in acoustic sensing of the ocean environment. The workshop was sponsored by the Fundação para a Ciêcia e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology).

Book Impact of Littoral Environmental Variability on Acoustic Predictions and Sonar Performance

Download or read book Impact of Littoral Environmental Variability on Acoustic Predictions and Sonar Performance written by Nicholas G. Pace and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The limiting influence of the environment on sonar has long been recognised as a major challenge to science and technology. As the area of interest shifts towards the lit toral, environmental influences become dominant both in time and space. The manyfold challenges encompass prediction, measurement, assessment and adaptive responses to maximize the effectiveness of systems. Although MCM and ASW activities are dom inated in different ways and scales by the environment, both warfare areas have had to consider the significantly changing requirements posed by operations in the littoraL The fundamental scientific issues involved in developing models relating acoustics to the environment are matched in difficulty by the need for data for their validation and eventual practical use for prediction. In many instances the need is for on-line adaptation of systems to changing circumstances whilst other needs are for the Ionger term planning activities. This book and the attached full-color CD are the proceedings of a conference organ ised by the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, held at Villa Marigola, Lerici, Italy, on 16-20 September 2002. The fundamental problems associated with environmental 1 variability and sonar were explored at a previous SACLANTCEN conference in 1990. These problems have not gone away but, on the one hand are exaggerated by the move to the littoral and on the other hand, are open to treatrnent in new ways that advances in technology and computer power allow.
