Book Comparing Video Modeling Approaches During Sports Activities to Increase Social Skills in Children with Autism

Download or read book Comparing Video Modeling Approaches During Sports Activities to Increase Social Skills in Children with Autism written by Jeanne Marie Ambrose and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video Modeling (VM) and Video Self-Modeling (VSM) were used to boost unprompted positive social engagements in two dyads of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A multiple baseline design within dyads compared the effectiveness of VM and VSM interventions in increasing each child's frequency of unprompted positive social engagements in a naturalistic after-school sports program. The present study adds to the current literature by comparing the effectiveness of two popular social skills interventions in a naturalistic setting. Results indicated that VM only successful for one participant while VSM was successful for three participants. VSM also showed to have a greater effect on generalization. The present study adds to the current literature by using VM or VSM as sole interventions (without prompting or reinforcement), offering treatment fidelity and social validity measures, and providing a strong case for using VSM, especially for generalization effects.

Book Comparing the Effectiveness of Social Skill Development Interventions with Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Children with Autism An Alternating Treatment Design

Download or read book Comparing the Effectiveness of Social Skill Development Interventions with Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Children with Autism An Alternating Treatment Design written by Lauren W Harrell and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to examine and compare the effects of applied behavior analysis treatments in conjunction with therapeutic horseback riding (THR) and the improvement of social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The research study compared the effectiveness of social behavior approaches during three conditions (THR, THR with token reinforcement, and THR with visual cues) using a single-subject research design to determine the "best treatment" for improving social skills among children with ASD (N=4). During the comparison phase, the researcher determined the frequency rate of receptive social skills and frequency of expressive social skills among each condition to determine the most effective approach in facilitating observed social skills. Results of this study indicated that while all three conditions increased social skills (receptive and expressive), the use of token reinforcement was the most effective in increasing the number of receptive and expressive communications. Practical implications and future research needs are provided for addressing social skill development with children with ASD.

Book A Components Analysis of Video Modeling and Reinforcement of Social Interaction During Game Playing of Children with Autism

Download or read book A Components Analysis of Video Modeling and Reinforcement of Social Interaction During Game Playing of Children with Autism written by Jessica Erin Hemmelgarn and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Video modeling has shown effective results in increasing social interaction in children with autism. Young children with autism may lack the ability to demonstrate appropriate social skills and communication skills. In order to assess acquisition of scripted statements, a multi--element design across two games was employed with two first-graders with autism. Both participants could independently play the games used; however, both needed continuous prompting in order to interact with a peer using contextually appropriate statements. Each participant was paired with a typical peer for game play. One game was presented to the participant with video modeling and tangible reinforcement, while the second game consisted of video modeling alone. Results are reviewed in terms of increasing the frequency of scripted statements and examining the comparative effects of video--modeling with and without edible reinforcers.

Book Building Social Relationships

Download or read book Building Social Relationships written by Scott Bellini and published by AAPC Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Social Relationships addresses the need for social skills programming for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders and other social difficulties by providing a comprehensive model that incorporates the following five steps: assess social functioning, distinguish between skill acquisition and performance deficits, select intervention strategies, implement intervention, and evaluate and monitor progress. The model describes how to organize and make sense of the myriad social skills strategies and resources available to parents and professionals. It is not meant to replace other resources or strategies, but to synthesize them into one comprehensive program.

Book The Impact of Video Modeling and Peer Mentoring of Social Skills for Middle School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Inclusive Settings

Download or read book The Impact of Video Modeling and Peer Mentoring of Social Skills for Middle School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Inclusive Settings written by Christine Rose Ogilvie and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the behavioral expectations of students by teachers and peers in middle school inclusive classrooms and characteristics inherent to students with ASD, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of video modeling and peer mentoring of five critical social skills for inclusion on middle school students with ASD. Specifically, the extent to which the combination of video modeling and peer mentoring of five critical social skills would increase the level of demonstration of these skills in the general education inclusion setting was investigated. Because individuals with ASD exhibit limited social communication skills, those skills necessary especially at the middle school level to understand the "hidden curriculum", social skills instruction has been deemed important (APA, 2004; Smith-Myles & Simpson). The current multiple baseline across subjects study was grounded in the research on video modeling (Bellini & Akullian, 2007) and peer mentoring (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2005; Maheady, Harper, & Mallette, 2001) as methods of providing social skills instruction for middle school students with ASD (Goldstein & McGinnis, 1997; Smith-Myles & Simpson, 2001). The impact of the video models and peer mentors was measured using the level of demonstration of five critical social skills on three middle school aged students with ASD. All three students with ASD were included in at least one general education classroom. The results of this investigation indicated that the combination of video modeling and peer mentoring of critical social skills positively impacted the levels of demonstration of the skills of students with ASD. While results varied, all three students with ASD increased their levels of demonstration of the targeted critical social skills.

Book Video Modeling for Teaching Social Skills to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Video Modeling for Teaching Social Skills to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Barbara Ann Rhinehart and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous studies have shown that video modeling (VM) interventions can improve various skills of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). VM is a technique that involves participants watching a video of a peer model demonstrating a desired behavior and then imitating the same behavior. The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of a VM intervention on social skills, defined as appropriate greeting tasks, of three elementary school-aged students with ASD. This study expands previous research on VM by measuring social skills using a social story as primer. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to determine if the students would imitate the greeting behavior after watching a video of a same-age peer reading the embedded social story and then demonstrating the greeting. A visual analysis of graphed data, effect size, and goal attainment scale for each student revealed that two out of three students improved significantly, while the third student exhibited no improvement.

Book Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD

Download or read book Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD written by James K. Luiselli and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a relatively new diagnostic label which reflects the variability and differentiation of symptomatology among children and youth commonly described as having autistic disorder, high-functioning autism (HFA), and Asperger's syndrome. Current best practices have emerged from decades of evidence-based research, research-to-practice translation of empirically supported procedures, and consensus-driven recommendations from multiple disciplines. As a result, practitioners have many educational and intervention choices for children and youth with ASD--what is critical is that these options are informed by empirical outcomes that have been replicated in experimental trials (group and single-case) and disseminated to professionals and researchers alike. Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a state-of-the-art volume of 15 chapters across four thematic sections that reflect the current convention of viewing autism along a continuum of presenting symptoms. Skillfully edited by James K. Luiselli, sections cover diagnosis, assessment, and measurement; evidence-based practices; health and development; and additional topics such as mindful caregiving and support, CBT, and behavioral family intervention. Compiling the most up-to-date advances in approaches toward diagnosis, education, treatment, and program development, Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be a valuable resource for professionals and trainees in the ASD field including psychologists, educators, therapists, behavior analysts, and similar practitioners. It is also appropriate for academic researchers and courses devoted to clinical psychology, special education, developmental disabilities, and special topics.

Book The Effectiveness of Using Video Modeling to Improve the Social Skills in Students with Autism

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Using Video Modeling to Improve the Social Skills in Students with Autism written by Michelle Haren and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to observe and record the effectiveness of video modeling to improve social skills in students with autism. This study used a pre and posttest design in an elementary special education classroom for students with autism. ages ranged from 8 to 12 years old during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. A pretest was administered to determine where each student social skills area. The parents and associates administered a posttest to determine how much growth was made during the study. The classroom associates and the students' teacher kept data on the frequency with which a student displayed a correct response or behavior during a learned social setting. The students watched a total of five videos, over a ten week period. The data from the pre and posttests, and the frequency data sheets showed a slight increase in the use of the learned social skills by the students identified for this study and therefore supported my hypothesis.

Book USE OF GENERALIZATION PROMOTION STRATEGIES AND VIDEO MODELING TO INCREASE SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Download or read book USE OF GENERALIZATION PROMOTION STRATEGIES AND VIDEO MODELING TO INCREASE SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM written by Megan A Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty with developing and generalizing the social skills necessary for long term success. Social skills deficits can often lead to shortcomings in other areas, and can hinder a child's potential for future independence. Currently, many studies addressing this issue use a train and hope approach to implementation, which does not always produce generalized outcomes. The study sought to determine how video modeling (VM) in conjunction with generalization-promotion strategies can be used to increase social skills acquisition for children with ASD. In this study, the use of generalization-promotion strategies and video modeling to increase social skills acquisition of children with ASD was evaluated by using a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Four students with ASD attending a public school and 11 neurotypical peers, all 8-10 years-old, participated in the study. Three behaviors were targeted based on results from the Autism Social Skills Profile (Bellini, 2006) completed by participants' parents/guardians. The three behaviors targeted were joining an activity, obtaining attention and taking turns. The following elements of the study were evaluated: the success of the video modeling intervention alone and the success of the video modeling intervention with the addition of generalization-promotion strategies, along with the procedural fidelity of the intervention and the social validity of the outcomes. The results of the study suggested video modeling alone produced increases in the training setting, but this result did not generalize to the new setting. Explicit intervention was required to produce generalization. Therefore, video modeling and generalization-promotion supported children with ASD in generalizing their use of learned social skills. Throughout each phase of the study, there was a high level of procedural fidelity, and parents/guardians' and data collectors' social validity survey responses suggested the interventions and outcomes were socially significant to the participants. Maintenance data suggested that participants were able to maintain the learned skills following the completion of the intervention. There were limitations to this research design, resulting in recommendations for future research.
