This book was released on 2006 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical report describes a study that was undertaken to compare the content of three mathematics assessments conducted in 2003: the NAEP fourth-and eighth-grade assessments; the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), which also assessed mathematics at the fourth-and eighth-grade levels; and the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which assessed the mathematical literacy of 15-year-old students. Its aim is to provide information useful for interpreting and comparing the results from the three assessments, based on an in-depth look at the content of the respective frameworks and assessment items. The report draws upon information provided by the developers of the assessments, as well as data obtained from an expert panel convened to compare the frameworks and items from the three assessments on various dimensions. The results of this study indicate that although the NAEP, TIMSS, and PISA 2003 mathematics frameworks address many similar topics and require students to use a range of cognitive skills and processes, it cannot be assumed that they measure the same content in the same way. Appended are: (1) Content Framework Summary Documents; (2) Levels of Mathematical Complexity; (3) Expert Panel; (4) Methodological Notes and Supplementary Data; and (5) Example Items. (Contains 22 tables, 18 figures, and 13 exhibits.).

Book excerpt: Standards for education achievement are under scrutiny throughout the industrial world. In this technological age, student performance in mathematics is seen as being particularly important. For more than four decades, international assessments conducted by the International Association for Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) have measured how well students are learning mathematics in different countries. The latest round of mathematics testing of the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) takes place in 2007. Beyond the horse race—the rankings that compare nations—what have we learned from the wealth of data collected in these assessments? How do US math curriculums compare to those used overseas? Is the effect of technology in the classroom uniform across nations? How do popular math reforms fare abroad? Those are some of the critical issues tackled in this important book. The authors use the database to address several pressing questions about school policy and educational research. For example, Ina Mullis and Michael Martin review the major lessons learned over the history of TIMSS testing. William Schmidt and Richard T. Houang examine whether curricular breadth affects student achievement. Jeremy Kilpatrick, Vilma Mesa, and Finbarr Sloane evaluate American performance in algebra relative to other nations and pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in American students' learning of algebra.

Book excerpt: The 2007 Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) is the 4th administration since 1995 of this international comparison. It is used to measure over time the math and science knowledge and skills of 4th- and 8th-graders. TIMSS is designed to align broadly with math and science curricula in the participating countries. This report focuses on the performance of U.S. students relative to that of their peers in other countries in 2007, and on changes in math and science achievement since 1995. Thirty-six countries or educational jurisdictions participated at grade 4 in 2007, while 48 participated at grade 8. This report also describes additional details about the achievement of U.S. student sub-populations. Extensive charts, tables and graphs.

Book Comparing Science Content in the National Assessment of Educational Progress NAEP 2000 and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study TIMSS 2003 Assessments Technical Report NCES 2006 026

Download or read book Comparing Science Content in the National Assessment of Educational Progress NAEP 2000 and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study TIMSS 2003 Assessments Technical Report NCES 2006 026 written by Teresa Smith Neidorf and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical report describes a study that was undertaken to compare the content of two recent fourth-and eighth-grade assessments in science: the NAEP 2000 assessment and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2003 assessment. Its aim is to provide information that will be useful for interpreting and comparing the results from the two assessments, based on an in-depth look at the content of the respective frameworks and assessment items. The report draws upon information provided by the developers of the assessments, as well as data obtained from an expert panel convened to compare the frameworks and items from the two assessments on various dimensions. The frameworks were compared with respect to: (1) how each assessment organizes and defines the science content, cognitive skills, and science processes to be assessed at each grade level; (2) the main content areas included and the set of topics covered in each; (3) how each assessment addresses scientific investigation or inquiry; and (4) the types and distribution of item formats used. The similarities and differences between NAEP and TIMSS are presented in this report for consideration when making meaningful comparisons and interpretations of the achievement results from the two assessments. While NAEP and TIMSS show similarities, particularly at the broad content area and topic level, differences are revealed by examining in more detail what the items in each assessment measure. (Contains 21 tables, 8 exhibits, and 11 figures.) Appended are: (1) Content Framework Summary Documents; (2) Summary Information on Cognitive Domains and Scientific Inquiry; (3) Expert Panel; (4) Methodological Notes and Supplementary Data; and (5) Example Items.

Download or read book Reign of Error written by Diane Ravitch and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the foremost authorities on education in the United States, former U.S. assistant secretary of education, “whistle-blower extraordinaire” (The Wall Street Journal), author of the best-selling The Death and Life of the Great American School System (“Important and riveting”—Library Journal), The Language Police (“Impassioned . . . Fiercely argued . . . Every bit as alarming as it is illuminating”—The New York Times), and other notable books on education history and policy—an incisive, comprehensive look at today’s American school system that argues against those who claim it is broken and beyond repair; an impassioned but reasoned call to stop the privatization movement that is draining students and funding from our public schools. In Reign of Error, Diane Ravitch argues that the crisis in American education is not a crisis of academic achievement but a concerted effort to destroy public schools in this country. She makes clear that, contrary to the claims being made, public school test scores and graduation rates are the highest they’ve ever been, and dropout rates are at their lowest point. She argues that federal programs such as George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind and Barack Obama’s Race to the Top set unreasonable targets for American students, punish schools, and result in teachers being fired if their students underperform, unfairly branding those educators as failures. She warns that major foundations, individual billionaires, and Wall Street hedge fund managers are encouraging the privatization of public education, some for idealistic reasons, others for profit. Many who work with equity funds are eyeing public education as an emerging market for investors. Reign of Error begins where The Death and Life of the Great American School System left off, providing a deeper argument against privatization and for public education, and in a chapter-by-chapter breakdown, putting forth a plan for what can be done to preserve and improve it. She makes clear what is right about U.S. education, how policy makers are failing to address the root causes of educational failure, and how we can fix it. For Ravitch, public school education is about knowledge, about learning, about developing character, and about creating citizens for our society. It’s about helping to inspire independent thinkers, not just honing job skills or preparing people for college. Public school education is essential to our democracy, and its aim, since the founding of this country, has been to educate citizens who will help carry democracy into the future.
